Biden and Suga to note Taiwan Strait in April joint statement

East Asia power shift toward China prompts first such mention since 1969

Japan and the U.S. plan to affirm the importance of stability in the Taiwan Strait when Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga visits Washington next month for a summit with President Joe Biden, Nikkei has learned.

The two sides are in discussions to include the passage on Taiwan in a joint statement after the summit. Both countries also intend to take a unified stance opposing China's new law empowering the coast guard.

Such a statement on Taiwan would mark a rare public expression of concern by U.S. and Japanese leaders. The last time was 1969, when Prime Minister Eisaku Sato and President Richard Nixon stressed in a statement that Taiwan's security is crucial for Japan's security.

The new concern reflects the sense of urgency among the allies toward the shifting power balance in East Asia. When U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited the Japanese Defense Ministry in Tokyo on March 16, his counterpart Nobuo Kishi noted that China's defense spending has now grown to 16 times that of Taiwan.

Later, when the defense chiefs attended a "two-plus-two" meeting alongside U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, they "underscored the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," according to a joint statement issued after the meeting.

Taiwan has gained new prominence since Adm. Philip Davidson, who heads the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, told a congressional hearing in early March that he thought China could take military action to control Taiwan in the next six years. The admiral's concerns over the erosion of conventional deterrence against China sent ripples across the Japanese defense community.

China possesses 1,250 fighter planes, five times more than what the U.S. military has in the region. That discrepancy will grow to eightfold by 2025, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command estimates. As for warships, the gap is expected to grow to ninefold from the current fivefold.

Bonji Ohara, a senior fellow at the Tokyo-based Sasakawa Peace Foundation, said China might attempt a landing on the Taiwan-administered Taiping Island in the South China Sea.

In 1979 brak Jimmy Carter de banden met Taiwan ten gunste van het Chinese vasteland.
Zondag was er het eerste bezoek van de US ambassadeur in Palau ( een eiland ten Oosten van de Filipijnen).

Taiwan on Sunday (March 28) saw the arrival of the first sitting U.S. ambassador since diplomatic ties between the countries were severed 42 years ago.

On Sunday, Palauan President Surangel Whipps Jr. arrived to kick off a new travel bubble between Taiwan and Palau, with the first flight slated for Thursday (April 1). Joining Whipps' delegation is Ambassador to Palau John Hennessey-Niland, the first U.S. ambassador to visit Taiwan in an official capacity since former President Jimmy Carter cut ties with Taipei in favor of Beijing in 1979.

Hennessey-Niland has more than 30 years of experience working in the Foreign Service, having previously been stationed in Hawaii, Fiji, and Ireland. During his confirmation hearing in 2019, he publicly expressed support for the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative (TAIPEI).

During the hearing, he said that he believes American ambassadors have the responsibility to express their dissatisfaction with China for its economic and political threats against Taiwan's allies. He also called on Washington to penalize Beijing for its "malicious behavior."

Over 4,000 migrants, many kids, crowded into Texas facility

The Biden administration for the first time Tuesday allowed journalists inside its main border detention facility for migrant children, revealing a severely overcrowded tent structure where more than 4,000 people, including children and families, were crammed into a space intended for 250 and the youngest were kept in a large play pen with mats on the floor for sleeping.

With thousands of children and families arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border in recent weeks and packing facilities, President Joe Biden has been under pressure to bring more transparency to the process. U.S. Customs and Border Protection allowed two journalists from The Associated Press and a crew from CBS to tour the facility in Donna, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, the nation’s busiest corridor for illegal crossings.

More than 4,100 people were being housed on the property Tuesday. Most were unaccompanied children processed in tents before being taken to facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services and then placed with a family member, relative or sponsor.

The children were being housed by the hundreds in eight “pods” formed by plastic dividers, each about 3,200 square feet (297 square meters) in size. Many of the pods had more than 500 children in them.

Oscar Escamilla, acting executive officer of the U.S. Border Patrol in the Rio Grande Valley, said 250 to 300 kids enter daily and far fewer leave.

Biden has declined to resume the Trump-era practice of expelling unaccompanied immigrant children. Several hundred kids and teenagers are crossing the border daily, most fleeing violence, poverty or the effects of natural disasters in Central America. In some cases, parents refused entry into the U.S. have sent their children across the border alone, hoping they will be placed with relatives eventually.

The Border Patrol is apprehending far more children daily than Health and Human Services is placing with U.S. sponsors, leading to a severe backlog in the system. The Border Patrol generally is not supposed to detain children for more than three days, but Health and Human Services lacks space.

More than 2,000 kids have been at the Donna facility for more than 72 hours, including 39 for more than 15 days.

HHS is housing children at convention centers in Dallas and San Diego and is opening large-scale sites in San Antonio, El Paso and elsewhere.

Biden has been sharply criticized by Republicans seeking to defend Trump’s immigration record, which includes the separation of thousands of immigrant families under a “zero tolerance” policy.

Wat bezield deze man?

Deze fantastische president heeft in ruim 100 dagen meer bereikt dan Trump in 4 jaren.
Dat is de kern van het verhaal; niet elke ruzie en ontslag eigen medewerkers en verdragen sluiten, die
de roze olifant had opgezegd. Waarom: enkel om te laten zien, dat hij de baas was.

Beursblik: plan Biden goed voor veel sectoren

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) De grote investeringen in infrastructuur die de Amerikaanse president Joe Biden woensdag heeft aangekondigd, zullen aanzienlijke impact hebben op beursgenoteerde bedrijven die zich richten op transport- en digitale infrastructuur en op nutsbedrijven. Dat voorziet strateeg Thomas van der Meij van Kempen Capital Management.

Het plan, goed voor in totaal 3.000 miljard dollar, maar waarvan vandaag circa 2.000 miljard wordt aangekondigd, rust volgens Van der Meij op drie pijlers: een upgrade van bestaande infrastructuur, groene energie en sociaal.

De upgrade van havens, vliegvelden en wegen, waarvoor 621 miljoen dollar wordt uitgetrokken, zijn gunstig voor bouwbedrijven, maar ook voor deelnemers aan privaat-publieke samenwerkingen. Van der Meij denkt aan Europese of Australische tolwegbeheerders.

Beursgenoteerde spoorwegbedrijven gaan naar aanleiding van de 'tweede grote spoorwegrevolutie' meer investeren in elektrisch rijden, in plaats van op diesel, denkt de analist.

De energiesector moet tegen 2035 koolstofvrij zijn en het hoogspanningsnetwerk wordt gemoderniseerd. ESG-gerichte elektriciteitsbedrijven moeten hiervan profiteren, verwacht Kempen.

Onderdeel van het sociale plan zijn sociale woningen, opleidingen en beter breedbandinternet, met 5G voor elke Amerikaan. Dit laatste is goed voor beheerders van datacentra en communicatietorens.

Er worden helemaal geen kinderen, die bij de grens asiel aanvragen, achter tralies gestopt.

Misschien kun jij beter eerst een artikel laten zien met foto's of tekst dat de migranten kinderen achter tralies zitten.

Naar Amerika is een grote stroom van migranten uit de armere landen van Zuid Amerika.
In de wintermaanden is de toestroom traditioneel groter

Hij moet het doen met de faciliteiten van Trump aan opvangcentra van immigranten.

Biden heeft te maken gehad met de restricties door de Corona pandemie en twee extreem koude weken in Februari in Texas.

In verband met de pandemie stuurt Biden volwassenen en kinderen onder begeleiding van volwassenen terug naar Mexico om daar hun asiel aanvraag af te wachten.

Echter Biden laat kinderen zonder begeleiding in de detentie centra blijven.
Biden vindt het onverantwoord hen terug te sturen de Mexicaanse woestijn in. Zij kunnen ten prooi vallen aan kinder handelaren en drugs cartels.

Door de grote toestroom en beperkte detentie capaciteit zitten de detentie centra overvol.
De asiel aanvragen worden in behandeling genomen. Echter dit neemt tijd in beslag waarbij men zoekt of de kinderen bij familie geplaatst kan worden die al in de US wonen.
Het aantal migranten kinderen dat arriveert is groter dan het aantal dat doorgeplaatst kan worden in de US.
