Vedomosti, the main business daily, published an excoriating editorial on Tuesday comparing Mr. Putin to President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, who the editorial said did basically nothing as the exchange rate there fell to four trillion Zimbabwe dollars for one American dollar.

While noting that Russia was in far better shape, the editorial said that “the biggest problem of Russian leadership is inability to admit mistakes.”

Now Russian GDP has shrunk so much it is no longer the world's eighth largest economic power, according to The Telegraph. Instead, Putin's Russia is now carries roughly the same economic weight as ... Spain:

Russia has lost its ranking as the world’s eighth biggest economy, shrinking in just nine months from a $2.1 trillion petro-giant to a mid-size player comparable with Korea or Spain.

For the past several years, Spain has been regarded as one of Europe's more feeble economies, with 1 in 4 Spaniards unemployed. Spain's GDP was about $1.4 trillion in 2013, according to the World Bank. Spain was the 13th biggest economy on the planet until Putin ordered tanks into the Crimea.

Het moet niet gekker worden. Een justitiëel onderzoek naar de centrale bank omdat die door feministen zou zijn overgenomen. Hoe verzin je het. Wie neemt zo'n land nog serieus? De vergelijking met Mugabe gaat mank: Mugabe is heel wat minder krankzinnig.

Gérard Depardieu shocked an audience at a solemn First World War commemoration by turning up drunk and shouting obscenities.
The 65-year-old French film star's embarrassing performance in Brussels on Sunday came after recently admitting that he sometimes drinks up to 14 bottles of wine a day.

In September, Depardieu told an interviewer: "I can't drink like a normal person.
I can absorb 12, 13, 14 bottles per day.
"In the morning, it starts at home with champagne or red wine before 10am, then again champagne."
Mr Depardieu was last year thrown off an Air France plane for urinating in the aisle as it prepared to take off, forcing the plane to turn back. He claimed he had a medical condition meaning he could not control his bladder.
Mr Depardieu in 2012 took residency of the Belgian town of Nechin – a few hundred yards from the French border – as a protest against France's 75 per cent tax on the rich.
He also took Russian citizenship in January 2013 and intends to start an organic vodka company. He owns several vineyards in France.

Poland has denied any suggestion that Russia’s Vladimir Putin was not invited to a Holocaust memorial along with EU leaders for political reasons.
The Polish foreign ministry said the organisers - the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and the International Auschwitz Council - followed normal procedure by sending notifications to 43 foreign embassies in Warsaw.

“All the notifications about the ceremony were sent by the organisers to international partners - including Russia - in the same format”, it told EUobserver on Wednesday (14 January).

“The museum asked all countries to attend at the highest possible level. Other countries didn’t raise any objections to this form of notification and many of them have confirmed top-level attendance”.

A spokeswoman for the museum, Katarzyna Kolonko, added: “Of course we sent a notification to Russia.”

De Russische president Vladimir Poetin gaat niet naar de 70e herdenkingsdag van de bevrijding van het vernietigingskamp Auschwitz in Polen. Dat zei zijn woordvoerder Dmitiri Peskov dinsdag in Moskou tegen het persbureau Interfax.

Poetin zou geen uitnodiging hebben gekregen voor de herdenking in Polen. De Tsjechische president Miloš Zeman had Poetin echter naar Praag uitgenodigd voor een plechtige bijeenkomst. Hierover gaf Peskov geen informatie.

De Russische president Poetin is eind deze maand niet bij de Auschwitz-herdenking. Volgens zijn woordvoerder heeft Poetin geen officiële uitnodiging gekregen. Ook zou de president een erg volle agenda hebben.

Itera and Eural Trans Gas, two intermediaries for Gazprom gas sales, siphoned off wads of cash that should have gone to the Russian treasury, she alleges. Half of the $50bn spent on the Sochi Olympics passed into the hands of Putin cronies, she says. Construction of Germany’s half of the Nord Stream pipeline cost €2.1mn per kilometre; Russia’s cost €5.8mn. Money that could have been spent in the Russian economy on schools, hospitals, or infrastructure, instead sustained the country’s billionaires. Given the rampant capital flight from the economy in recent months, not much of their cash has been recycled locally either.

For some readers, these claims will be old news. But the scale and breadth of Dawisha’s allegations are still shocking. It wasn’t just Gunvor, she suggests – over decades Putin’s fingers have reached into many pies, from gambling to real estate to energy and banking. In Dawisha’s account, Russia’s president was a cheat in Dresden, a crook in Petersburg and a fraud in the Kremlin. “If you want to steal, steal a little in a nice way,” said Sese Seko Mobutu, the Zairian president who despoiled his entire country. The thieving in Putin’s Russia has been neither nice nor little.
