A Russian soldier bumped into a Ukrainian position of "Donbass" regiment. When asked what he was doing there, he said he got up in the morning and got sent for bread. Ukrainian soldiers were really surprised with this answer...

Toch vind ik het bijzondere cijfers. Meer dan 90% van de Russen zou niet trots zijn op Putin. Ben ook benieuwd hoe het met die trots vorig jaar was en vóór het binnenvallen van Oekraïne.

Ukraine to Receive GLSDB Precision Bombs for HIMARS Rocket Systems

Ukraine will receive GLSDB long-range precision bombs designed for HIMARS rocket systems.

It is reported that the Pentagon has successfully tested a new long-range precision bomb.

“The GLSDB is expected to arrive on the battlefield as early as Wednesday (January 31 – ed.),” the statement said.

Ukraine is to receive the first batch of such bombs, which can travel about 150 km.

Nederland trekt € 122 miljoen uit voor munitie, materieel en cybersecurity in Oekraïne

Nederland draagt € 87 miljoen bij aan de inkoop van artilleriegranaten voor Oekraïne. Ook wordt er € 25 miljoen in het Internationale Fonds voor Oekraïne (IFU) gestort om materieel te kopen. Verder steekt de regering nog € 10 miljoen in het verbeteren van de Oekraïense cyberverdediging. Minister Kajsa Ollongren meldde dit vandaag aan de Tweede Kamer.

Ukraine's Hunt for Russia's 'Special Equipment' Is Paying Off

Russia has lost a record amount of what Ukraine has called "special equipment," or the less flashy but still vital assets that prop up Moscow's war machine, according to new statistics from Kyiv's military.

Russia lost another four units of such equipment in the past day, the Ukrainian military said in an operational update on Wednesday. Updated figures from Kyiv show Russia has now lost 1,452 units of "special equipment" in more than 23 months of grueling warfare.

On January 1, this figure stood at 1,277, putting January's losses at 175 units of "special equipment."

This is higher than any monthly losses reported by the Ukrainian military throughout 2023. The highest reported monthly losses of Russian "special equipment" were in July 2023, when Russia lost 135 units, according to the Ukraine's armed forces.

An innocuous, catch-all term, the mounting losses of Russia's "special equipment" have gone largely unnoticed. But Ukraine is targeting the equipment that keeps Russia's military running behind the front lines, enabling it to sustain the simultaneous offensives Moscow has launched.

It includes Russia's electronic warfare systems and radars, experts say, as well as engineering equipment like mine-clearing vehicles. It will also cover Russia's support and maintenance vehicles needed to keep other assets, like tanks and armored vehicles, functioning.

"The Ukrainian forces hunt such equipment," former Ukrainian colonel Serhiy Hrabsky told Newsweek.

This type of equipment doesn't feature individually in the Ukrainian military's daily breakdown of Russian losses, but still needs to be counted, Marina Miron, a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of War Studies at King's College London told Newsweek.

Russia Accused of Using WWI-Era Chemical Weapon in Ukraine

Colonel Oleksandr Shtupun, the spokesperson for the Tavria Ukrainian military group operating on the southeastern front line, said on Tuesday that Russian forces had been using "K-51 grenades with chloropicrin" in their attacks on Kyiv's positions.

The substance is a compound commonly used in the agricultural industry for its antimicrobial, fungicide, herbicide and insecticide properties. But it has also been used as a chemical weapon for its irritant effects, particularly in World War I.

"The enemy continues to violate the customs of warfare and use ammunition with poisonous substances of chemical origin," Shtupun said, as quoted by Ukraine's ArmyInform website.

How Many People Have Died in Russia-Ukraine War?

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine will enter its third year next month, and there is little sign the conflict will conclude soon, with Russian President Vladimir Putin recently suggesting the war will only end "when we achieve our goals."

Estimates of those killed in the conflict have been hard to substantiate, with neither side publishing tallies of their losses. U.S. officials said in August that Ukraine and Russia's total deaths and injuries had neared 500,000.

Newsweek consulted reports and experts to see what, if anything, can be reliably reported about the number of military and civilian deaths since Russia's invasion in 2022.
What Are Russia's Losses?

Western officials have cast doubts on the accuracy of Russia's figures on military casualties.

The last update from the Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, in September 2022, said there had been 6,000 Russian casualties. This contradicted other reports from even earlier in the conflict; in July 2022 the head of the British Armed Forces said that some 50,000 Russian soldiers had been killed or wounded.

Earlier this week, the BBC's Russian service, along with independent outlet Mediazona, reported that civilian recruits who have joined the Russian military since February 2022 accounted for almost half of Russia's current combat losses. Rusland is niet onverslaanbaar en zou de oorlog tegen Oekraïne wel eens kunnen verliezen. Dat hebben Russische propagandisten toegegeven in de talkshow van de beruchte presentator Vladimir Solovyov op de Russische staatstelevisie. “We moeten dringend onze wapenproductie opdrijven. Kijk naar de twintigste eeuw: toen hebben zowel het Russische Rijk als de Sovjet-Unie verloren”, klonk het.

Volgens de talkshowgasten gaat Moskou mogelijk een onzekere toekomst tegemoet nu de oorlog zijn tweede jaar ingaat. Evgeny Buzhinsky, een voormalige luitenant-generaal en militair expert, waarschuwde zelfs dat Rusland de oorlog wel eens zou kunnen verliezen. “Om ervoor te zorgen dat we niet ingehaald worden, moeten we de (wapen)productie opdrijven”, zei hij.

Solovyov ging onmiddellijk in het verweer. “We kunnen niet verliezen, want wat is de wereld zonder Rusland?”, vroeg de presentator zich luidop af.
Niet onoverwinbaar

Maar volgens Andrei Sidorov, vicedecaan van de faculteit wereldpolitiek van de Staatsuniversiteit van Moskou, is Rusland niet onoverwinbaar. “De hypothese dat ons land niet kan verliezen klopt niet helemaal”, benadrukte hij. “Kijk naar de twintigste eeuw. Zowel het Russische Rijk als de Sovjet-Unie hebben toen verloren.”

“Geen probleem, dan zullen we SMERSJ wel gewoon nieuw leven inblazen”, reageerde Solovyov. SMERSJ, oftewel ‘Dood aan de Spionnen’ in het Russisch, is een geheime dienst die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd opgericht om infiltranten te ontmaskeren.

GLSDB

GLSD? uses two combat-proven systems that allow users to quickly engage a variety of targets, from any angle at a considerable distance.

The history of the GLSDB begins with Boeing’s GBU-39 precision-guided glide bomb, the first in the Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) family.

The bomb has wings that fold in flight, which significantly increases the strike range.

For the bomb, the engine was selected from the ?26 rocket, which is used to launch from the ?142 HIMARS and ?270.

The maximum firing distance of GLSDB can reach 150 kilometers in the direction of launch. Thus, the GLSDB is a glide bomb crossed with a solid rocket motor.

Russische opstandelingen schieten passagiersvliegtuig uit de lucht met een raket, gefinancierd en bediend door Russen/Rusland. Maar er is geen baar geld overgemaakt dus geen keihard bewijs.

Vrijspraak vanwege gebrek aan bewijs wil natuurlijk niet zeggen dat iemand onschuldig is.
Zo werkt (onafhankelijke) rechtspraak nu eenmaal, iets dat ze in rusland niet (meer) hebben.

In november 2016 trok president Vladimir Poetin per decreet de Russische ondertekening van het stichtingsverdrag van het Internationaal Strafhof in. Aanleiding hiervoor was het besluit van het Strafhof het conflict in Oost-Oekraïne te bestempelen tot een internationaal conflict tussen Rusland en Oekraïne.

Rusland is ook geïrriteerd over een onderzoek van het Strafhof naar mogelijke oorlogsmisdaden door Russische troepen in Georgië in de Russisch-Georgische Oorlog in 2008. Volgens mensenrechtenorganisaties komen ook de Russische luchtbombardementen op Aleppo in Syrië neer op oorlogsmisdaden.In de praktijk verandert er niet veel, omdat Rusland het verdrag nooit heeft geratificeerd, waarmee het de rechtsmacht van het Strafhof ook nooit heeft geaccepteerd.
