Investors Back Aviation H2’s Hydrogen Jet Engine Plane Plans

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
21 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

An oversubscribed capital raise shows investors have confidence in Aviation H2’s plans to build Australia’s first hydrogen powered-plane. Investors have clearly shown they believe in Aviation H2’s engineering-first approach after backing an initial capital raising to fund the planning study for the development of the green energy jet engine plane. Aviation H2 is firmly of the belief that Australia has the opportunity to become a global leader in this space, which is projected to reach USD 174 billion by 2040. The company is looking to achieve this by developing a state-of-the-art method for converting a traditional aircraft into a hydrogen-fuelled plane, allowing potential customers to modify existing aircraft rather than investing in an entirely new fleet.

Aviation H2 is currently testing a variety of options for carbon free flight and will present the most commercially viable option to its board in mid-March. They expect to have a plane in the sky within the next 18 months.

Hydrogen is widely seen as the fuel of the future that will complement batteries as the world shifts towards net zero emissions. While batteries and electric vehicles have taken an apparent early lead in the consumer vehicles segment, hydrogen has been touted as the better option for commercial and heavier vehicles. This is due to a combination of the mass required for batteries and their long recharge time, against the ability of hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles to be quickly refuelled – an undeniable benefit for vehicles which need to be on road to perform their jobs. However, there is one transportation segment that is hydrogen’s for the winning and that’s aviation, a sector that makes up 2% of global emissions.

While batteries are certainly viable if you’re talking about propeller driven planes, they don’t even come into consideration for long-range flights. Barring any major technological breakthroughs, batteries are simply too heavy for long-range aircraft. This means green hydrogen is the only viable option for zero emissions, long-distance. There’s still some work required before it’s viable, but hydrogen’s energy density makes it the only real alternative to jet fuel.

ZoneFlow Secures US Patent for Hydrogen Bayonet Reactor

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
21 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

ZoneFlow Reactor Technologies LLC announced that it granted a US patent for its ZoneFlowTM Bayonet Reactor. The reactor’s innovative design promises to significantly drive down the cost of hydrogen production, further strengthening the resource’s viability as an alternative for fossil fuel use. Recirculating syngas through the Bayonet Reactor transfers the heat in the syngas to the cooler reactant gases entering the reactor, contributing 15-20% of the heat required for hydrogen production. This results in a corresponding reduction in the demand on, and the expense of, the furnace and its fuel.

ZoneFlow expects to test the commercial version of the Bayonet Reactor in 2022 in connection with its recently announced joint development project with Honeywell UOP.

ZF Bayonet Reactors solve a problem that has perplexed designers of steam methane reforming equipment for decades. The reforming process requires high temperatures and the hydrogen-containing syngas it produces exits the conventional reactor tubes at a similar temperature. In current practice, the hot syngas is used to make steam or preheat feedstock, but a much higher value use would be making hydrogen. The ZF Bayonet Reactor does so, returning the syngas through a central tube to use its heat in the reforming process taking place in the annulus of the larger reactor tube. Although the idea of a bayonet reactor is not new, proprietary features of the ZF Bayonet Reactor make it practical for the first time.

Japan to Develop Next-Gen Hydrogen Engine for Aircraft

The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will begin development of a next-generation aircraft engine that uses liquid hydrogen as fuel in fiscal 2022.

Hydrogen-powered aircraft that emit no CO2 may someday become mainstream, so Japan wants to secure the core technologies in order to enhance the international competency of its aviation industry.

The ministry on Friday presented its prioritized themes and work schedule in the aviation industry field to an expert panel, including the development of hydrogen engines.

JAXA has experience in using liquid hydrogen as fuel for rockets. The agency will continue its research and development of pumps to send the fuel to engines, combustor chambers and materials for tanks until fiscal 2030, and the developed technologies will be transferred to domestic manufacturers and others.

Japan’s aviation industry lacks the technology to design and manufacture complete aircraft on its own. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries ended up putting on hold its jet airliner business, but now aims to regain its footing by developing hydrogen engines.

Because liquid hydrogen has a low temperature of minus 253 C, there are also plans to harness this cooling capacity and combine it with superconducting motors.

Research and development for zero-emission aircraft is already taking off in the United States and Europe with an eye on the 2030s, when the current fleets of large passenger planes will start nearing their decommissioning.

European aviation giant Airbus aims to commercialize a hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2035. Although burning hydrogen does not emit CO2, safety and cost issues have yet to be overcome.

Published on :
22 Feb, 2022, 5:35 am

Uniper and Salzgitter AG have signed a cooperation agreement with the aim of supplying the SALCOS project in Salzgitter for the production of climate-friendly steel with green hydrogen at competitive conditions from Uniper. The cooperation aims to supply hydrogen from Wilhelmshaven. Uniper is developing two projects for green hydrogen there: On the one hand, an import terminal for ammonia is planned, which will be able to convert the ammonia back into hydrogen. On the other hand, Uniper is planning a large electrolysis that will generate green hydrogen with an output of up to 1000 MW. For this purpose, a direct connection of offshore wind farms to be newly built in the North Sea is to be examined. The electrolysis and the entire downstream hydrogen infrastructure act like a shock absorber that stores the wind energy as hydrogen and makes it transportable when there is strong wind.

Uniper and Salzgitter AG will work together with other well-known partners to supply Salzgitter via the emerging German hydrogen pipeline network and to develop cavern storage facilities. Both companies are jointly driving the ambitious vision of decarbonizing German industry in support of climate goals and are contributing to their achievement with such concrete projects.

Uniper is an international energy company and a pioneer in the field of hydrogen. With around 35 gigawatts of installed capacity, Uniper is one of the largest power generators in the world. Uniper's core activities include both power generation in Europe and Russia and global energy trading, as well as a broad gas portfolio that makes Uniper one of the leading gas companies in Europe. Uniper is also a reliable partner for municipalities, municipal utilities and industrial companies when it comes to planning and implementing innovative CO 2-mitigating solutions on their way to decarbonizing their activities. Together with Fortum, Uniper is already actively building up its own electrolysis capacities, particularly in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK as well as in Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

23 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

H3 Dynamics has successfully completed the world’s first fully-integrated hydrogen-electric propulsion aircraft nacelle, the core enabling power solution for future hydrogen aircraft designs propulsion. Instead of a single centralised hydrogen fuel cell system, H3 Dynamics distributes multiple integrated powertrains incorporating batteries, fuel cells, hydrogen storage, and smaller electric motors across the wings. This means the size of each fuel cell system, hybrid battery pack, and heat management challenges all become smaller, making systems more manageable and safer. In the coming years, distributed hydrogen electric propulsion architecture could become a reality in aircraft with the capacity to carry up to 100 passengers. This fact would make it possible for hydrogen aircraft to cover distances of more than 2,500 km, far beyond the short-haul distances planned for battery-electric aircraft.

The company has announced that the new H3 Dynamics hydrogen propulsion systems will begin flight tests in France in the coming weeks.

In 2018, H3 Dynamics filed international patents for large-scale distributed hydrogen propulsion and announced plans for Element One, a visionary hydrogen aircraft applying this technology.

H3 Dynamics has been working on safety certification deadlines and entering the market with lower risk, reduced weight unmanned platforms, progressing step by step towards heavier and manned cargo platform.

23 Feb, 2022, 5:30 am

Hydrogen producer Hycamite TCD Technologies has announced that it has secured new investors from Hong Kong, Japan and Finland. In this funding round, shares of the company were acquired by new investors in addition to existing shareholders as well as company staff. The most recent funding round has brought the company an additional EUR 3 million in investments. Hycamite uses a thermo-catalytic process as a hydrogen producer. It produces H2 in an emission-free way, sometimes known as red H2. Hycamite produces emission-free hydrogen and industrial-grade carbon from methane at KIP in Finland. The company plans to build an industrial pilot plant on the same site this year.

The hydrogen producer has a small test facility, which it opened with catalyst and process development. The test facility and catalyst and process development were opened in the Kokkola Industrial Park in 2021. The firm reduces the emission of greenhouse gases through the use of catalysts and heat for methane molecule breakdown. The outcome is natural gas and biogas which is then processed further into H2 and solid clean carbon. The latter substance is usable as a material for producing electric car batteries.

The technology Hycamite is using is based on established research in applied chemistry conducted by University of Oulu, Finland researchers. Zero-emission H2 demand has been rising faster than had been previously expected and H2 production companies are moving fast to secure their place in the market.

In-der-City-Bus GmbH has awarded Everfuel GmbH the contract for the planning, construction and commissioning of a hydrogen refuelling station. The contract also includes maintenance and servicing. Additionally, Everfuel was awarded the contract for the supply of hydrogen for a minimum of three years.

The planned hydrogen refuelling station has the capacity to refuel at least 22 fuel-cell buses per day. It is designed to be fully redundant and modular so that the station can easily be expanded to refuel a larger number of hydrogen buses.

The green hydrogen dispensed will be delivered in Everfuel’s custom-build hydrogen trailers. The project will contribute to a significant reduction to emissions of climate-damaging greenhouse gases.

With this project, ICB is launching the next phase of its electrification concept where battery buses have been in use since 2018. With the fuel cell buses, the company is now integrating the second fossil-free technology into its fleet. In the future, the respective technological system advantages will thus be played out in Frankfurt's local transport.

ICB ordered their first 13 fuel cell buses from Solaris in mid-2021. These will be operated on the 22-kilometre Line 36 when delivered. The line runs almost exclusively through densely populated inner-city districts and areas close to the city center of Frankfurt.
