German engineering firm IAV pleads guilty in VW emissions scandal

Automotive News reported that a German engineering company co-owned by Volkswagen Group pleaded guilty to a felony count of conspiracy in US District Court here for its role in helping VW to develop the defeat device software needed to temporarily alter the performance of its first so-called clean diesel engines. The software developed by IAV, headquartered in Berlin with offices in suburban Detroit, enabled Volkswagen to cheat on emissions testing to win certification for its Gen 1 2.0-liter turbodiesel vehicles, beginning in the 2009 model year.

Appearing before US District Judge Sean Cox on Friday, IAV pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the US and the automaker's customers in the U.S. to violate the Clean Air Act. The engineering company had agreed to plead guilty in a plea agreement last month.

The company has agreed to pay a USD 35 million fine, which was set under U.S. sentencing guidelines "according to the company's inability to pay a higher fine amount without jeopardizing its continued viability." It also agreed to operate under the guidelines of a court-appointed monitor for two years. However, IAV's sentencing was held in abeyance while the court conducts a probationary investigation. Sentencing was deferred until May 22 at 2PM.

Volkswagen pleaded guilty to three felonies in March 2017 resulting from its diesel emissions scandal and agreed to pay a criminal fine of USD 2.8 billion, as well as agreeing to be under an independent corporate compliance monitor for three years.

The Dacia brand posted a new sales record in Europe with 511,622 vehicles registered (+10.3%) and a record market share of 2.9% (+0.3 points). This increase is linked to the performance of the New Duster launched at the beginning of the year and Sandero.

Groupe Renault is pursuing its Drive the Future plan by expanding internationally, with registrations now representing 50.6% of total sales (vs. 49.2% in 2017), thanks in particular to the integration of the Jinbei and Huasong brands, and despite the decline in sales in Turkey and India and the cessation of sales in Iran since early September.

In Russia, the Group’s second largest country in terms of sales volume, the market grew by 12,8%. The Group is the leader, with more than one car in four sold being a Lada or a Renault. Sales increased by 10.9%.

In Africa, the Group strengthened its leadership with a 18.1% market share, with 218,797 vehicles sold, thanks to its performance in Morocco, South Africa and Egypt. The market share in Morocco reached 43% with a 7% increase in sales volume. Dacia maintains its leadership with Dokker and Logan, the two best-selling vehicles.

Renault brand sales rose by 14.9% to more than 26,000 units in South Africa, representing a 4.9% market share. In Egypt, its market share reached 11.4%, up by more than 3 points with 20,504 vehicles sold.

In China, the Group is continuing to implement the “Drive the future” plan. Dongfeng-Renault volumes are down 26.9% pending the launch of new models in 2019. The launch of the RBJAC joint venture (Jinbei/Huasong) is progressing well. The Group is stepping up its electric vehicles offensive by investing in JM EV, the 5th largest electric vehicle manufacturer. In total, by integrating the new Jinbei /Huasong brands, the group’s volumes in China amounted to 216,699 units.

GROUPE RENAULT OUTLOOK 2019

The European market is also expected to be stable. The Russian market is expected to grow by at least 3% and the Brazilian market by 10%.

In this context, Groupe Renault is aiming for a slight increase in sales in 2019, with an acceleration in the second half of the year thanks to the launch of new international models and the launch of New Clio, the Group’s flagship model in Europe.

GM warns workers in Brazil on losses and tough turnaround plan

Reuters reported that General Motors Co has warned employees in Brazil that new investments there depend on a painful plan to return to profit in the country, according to a memo seen by Reuters on Saturday. In a message posted at Brazilian plants, GM's top executive in Brazil and Argentina, Mr Carlos Zarlenga, said after running up a heavy loss over the past three years the operation had reached a critical moment that will require sacrifices from everyone.

The memo referenced comments that Chief Executive Ms Mary Barra made during investor presentations last week about challenges in South America. She said that "We are not going to keep deploying capital to lose money.”

GM spokesmen in Brazil did not immediately comment on the memo, which was first reported by newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo.

The dire tone came as a shock to some workers in Brazil, where GM has overtaken Volkswagen AG and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV to become the industry sales leader as the economy rebounds slowly from a deep slump.

In April 2018, Mr Zarlenga touted a new family of low-cost cars hitting Brazilian dealerships this year as he played up progress in an interview with Reuters. He said cost reductions in the downturn, including a 35 percent cut to the Brazilian workforce, led to a narrow profit in South America in 2017.

While Brazil's economy has gradually recovered after a 2015-16 recession, Argentina fell back into recession last year as inflation surged and its currency cratered. Investors are watching to see if the presidents of both countries can pull off the tough economic reforms they have promised.

Mr Zarlenga said regional executives had prepared a "viability plan" for senior management in Detroit, but they still need the support of local unions, suppliers, dealerships and government. "GM investments and our future depend on this plan," he said.

Last year, Brazil's government granted carmakers a 15-year package of tax breaks - extending subsidies for an industry that has struggled to compete directly with production elsewhere.

Tesla in talks with Lishen over Shanghai battery contract – Report

Reuters reported that Tesla Inc has signed a preliminary agreement with China's Tianjin Lishen to supply batteries for its new Shanghai car factory, as it aims to cut its reliance on Japan's Panasonic, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.

The companies had yet to reach a decision on how large an order the U.S. electric car company would place, and Lishen was still working out what battery cell size Tesla would require, one of the sources said.

While Panasonic is currently Tesla's exclusive battery cell supplier, Tesla Chief Executive Mr Elon Musk said in November the US company would manufacture all its battery modules and packs at the Shanghai factory and planned to diversify its sources.

Mr Musk said in a tweet in November that "Cell production will be sourced locally, most likely from several companies (incl Pana), in order to meet demand in a timely manner.”

Tesla broke ground on the USD 2 billion so-called Gigafactory, its first in China, earlier this month and plans to begin making Model 3 electric vehicles (EV) there by the end of the year.

Mr Musk has said the factory will produce "more affordable" vehicles for the Chinese auto market, the world's biggest, where the firm is facing mounting competition and risks from US-China trade tensions.

Volkswagen planning to extending diesel incentives across Germany

Reuters reported that German carmaker Volkswagen is examining whether to extend trade-in incentives to owners of older vehicles in all of Germany, extending the programme beyond the 15 most heavily polluted cities. Under pressure to avert bans of diesel vehicles in key cities, carmakers have started offering trade-in incentives to encourage customers to scrap older diesel vehicles for more modern cleaner vehicles.

A spokesman said the responsible board committee is examining a nationwide trade-in incentive for Euro 4 or Euro 5 diesel vehicles for a limited time period and is expected to make a decision early next week.

Volkswagen said in October it will offer buyers of VW-branded passenger cars an incentive if they agree to scrap cars equipped with older Euro 1 to Euro 4 engines.

The trade-in incentive is currently limited to Germany's 15 most polluted cities.

German daily Bild first reported that VW was considering extending the trade-in incentive to all of Germany. The paper said details were still being worked out but the company would pay up to 9,000 euros (USD 10,200) per car as previously envisaged.

German carmakers have already agreed to spend up to 3,000 euros (USD 3,431) per vehicle to upgrade engine management software to make exhaust filtering systems more effective, but environmentalists say these measures are insufficient.

Renault wijzigt bestuursstructuur

Volvo recalls over 200,000 cars to fix fuel leak issue

ToI reported that Volvo Cars, which is owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, is voluntarily recalling about 200,000 cars after it found an engineering issue that could potentially cause fuel leakage in the engine compartment over time. The group said its probe had identified that some vehicles may have small cracks inside one of the fuel lines in the engine compartment, which along with a pressurised fuel system may over time lead to fuel leakage in the engine compartment.

About 2,19,000 cars of 11 different models produced in 2015 and 2016 had been affected, the Swedish company said, with the highest number of impacted cars in Sweden, the UK and Germany. The Swedish recall was first reported by daily Aftonbladet.

Volvo sold 5,03,127 cars in 2015 and 5,34,332 cars in 2016.

Volvo said in its statement that "There are no reports alleging injuries or damages related to this issue. Volvo preventatively recalls the cars to avert any possible future problems.”

The company's fortunes have been revived since Geely bought it in 2010 and its popular new premium models now compete with larger rivals Daimler and Volkswagen. It sold a record 6,42,253 cars in 2018.

However, a prolonged US-China trade war has inflated raw materials costs and resulted in a slowdown in Chinese demand for cars. That has forced Volvo to spend to retool its global factories to limit the negative tariff impact and led it to postpone its plans to go public indefinitely.

Volkswagen celebrates five millionth Tiguan

Volkswagen can already celebrate an impressive production anniversary right at the start of 2019: in the middle of January, the five millionth Tiguan left the assembly line at the Wolfsburg plant. The compact Tiguan has enjoyed worldwide success since its market launch in 2007, and has thus made a valuable contribution to the brand’s growth strategy and SUV offensive. The harmonious design concept of the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace (since 2017) has been enthusiastically received by customers all over the world. The Tiguan stands for striking exterior and interior design, state-of-the art technologies and outstanding all-round characteristics. The just under 800,000 Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace vehicles delivered in 2018 are proof of the popularity and success of the compact SUV.

Dr Andreas Tostmann, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Production: “The Tiguan has passed the historic mark of five million vehicles produced. The know-how of our team, the exceptional team spirit and the enthusiasm with which we produce our Volkswagen models form the basis for this magnificent success and provide a strong foundation for our SUV strategy.”

Mr Bernd Osterloh chairman of the General and Group Works Council said that “The Tiguan secures the jobs of tens of thousands of highly qualified workers around the world and makes a significant contribution to earnings. For this reason, it is important that we do not reduce our investments in the development and production of the Tiguan, as we should seek to inspire our customers with this car well into the future.”

Production of the Tiguan started in 2007 in the main plant in Wolfsburg and represented the beginning of the success story of this compact SUV. More than 120,000 units already left the assembly line in the first full year of production in 2008. This was followed by steep continuous growth – in 2015, more than 500,000 Tiguan had already been sold worldwide.

Bugatti looks back on a successful year and forward to the anniversary in 2019

J Bugatti just entered a historic year. In 2019, the company from Molsheim in the French region of Alsace will be 110 years old. At the same time Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann looks back at his first year at the head of the french hyper car manufacturer. This is the time to glimpse into the rear view mirrors, and then to look straight ahead.

Bugatti has been developing high-performance cars in Molsheim, Alsace, since 1909. It all started with the Type 10, which was later marketed as the Bugatti Type 13 after further development, with aesthetics bordering on a work of art. These are the characteristics that distinguish the carmaker from France and also apply to its current models, the Chiron1 and Divo2. These models represent the ultimate hyper sports car: they are the most powerful, most valuable and most luxurious automobiles in the world, handcrafted over a period of weeks with painstaking attention to detail.

President of Bugatti Automobiles SAS, Mr Stephan Winkelmann said that “Automobiles from Bugatti combine the best of two worlds, as the Chiron and Divo impressively demonstrate: a hypercar with 1,500 PS and 1,600 newton-metres combining performance and easy driving, but at the same time featuring a pronounced feeling of luxury and vrry high comfort. This is an unparalleled combination in the world of the automobile. Top speed alone is not the top priority for Bugatti. Our cars can do more than accelerate incredibly powerfully and drive very very fast.”

Bugatti has produced the Chiron, which is largely handcrafted, since 2016. In 2018, a total of 76 Individual luxury hyper sports cars, each of them unique, left the factory. Currently, the production of the total series limited to 500 units is allocated until the end of 2021. Mr Stephan Winkelmann said that “The Chiron is a perfect blend of three pillars in the Bugatti tradition. The super sports car combines a street-legal racing car in the tradition of the famous T 35 with the comfort and luxury of a Type 41 Royale and the iconic design of the Type 57 SC Atlantic.” Today’s design credo is: form follows performance. This can be seen in the famous Bugatti line, a sculpted letter “C” running from the B-pillar to the back. But that is not enough.

In 2018, the French luxury brand heightened the focus of its portfolio with the Chiron Sport and the Divo. This super sports car with its own character is also powered by Bugatti’s 1,500 PS eight-litre W16 engine. Compared with the Chiron, the developers tuned the Divo for greater agility, nimbleness and optimum handling performance on winding roads without sacrificing the usual levels of comfort and luxury. Fine-tuning was carried out especially on the aerodynamic properties, the chassis settings and weight of the car. As a result, the Divo generates 90 kilograms more downforce and weighs 35 kilograms less than the Chiron. The lateral acceleration of the Divo has been boosted to 1.6 granted.

No deal Brexit would cost it USD 800 million this year – Ford

Reuters reported that Ford faces an USD 800 million bill if Britain leave the European Union without a deal, comprising World Trade Organisation tariffs and the impact of a weaker pound, Sky News reported on Thursday, citing internal calculations from the auto company. Car makers and other manufacturers, including Airbus earlier on Thursday, have warned about the toll a no-deal Brexit could impose, including higher tariffs, disruption to supply chains and threats to jobs.

Britain is due to leave the European Union in 64 days, and with Prime Minister Theresa May failing to win support for her negotiated deal, companies are increasingly worried about the possibility of a chaotic Brexit.

Ford operates two engine plants in Britain, its third-largest market, and the destination for roughly one in three cars made at its German Cologne plant.

Carmaker Opel to halve production at Ruesselsheim - Report

Reuters reported that French carmaker PSA Group's Opel will adjust production volume at its Ruesselsheim plant in Germany this year, it said after a newspaper reported that the company is halving the plant's output. Opel is cutting production at Ruesselsheim to 68,000 vehicles from 123,000 in 2018. An Opel spokesman said that "Opel continuously adjusts production. We want to further improve the capacity utilisation of our plants. This of course also applies to Ruesselsheim, adding that the company does not publicly comment on details of its internal plans.”

PSA bought Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall from GM last year in a USD 2.6 billion deal, saying it aimed to restore Opel to profitability by 2020.

PSA Group had posted a 7.8 percent increase in quarterly revenue, buoyed by the acquisition of Opel-Vauxhall as well as strong sales of pricier Peugeot models.

An Opel works council representative was not immediately available for comment.

In May Opel's labour leaders had agreed with PSA management on an investment plan and job guarantees for German factories in return for wage concessions.

Toyota Motor aims to boost sales in China by 8% this year

Reuters reported that Toyota Motor Corp aims to raise vehicle sales in China by 8% to 1.6 million this year. The Japanese automaker said that Toyota sold 1.47 million vehicles in China last year, up 14.3% from 2017. Toyota's forecast comes at a time when automakers in China in general are bracing for a tough year after weakness in sales emerged last year. China's Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) this month said it expects sales to show no growth, forecasting flat sales of 28.1 million vehicles for 2019. Other government and industry bodies see a 0-2 percent growth in overall demand.

China's automotive market last year contracted for the first time since the 1990s.

Despite the slowdown in the overall market, sales by Japanese companies especially Toyota remain strong.

Last year China and Japan pledged to forge closer ties during a three-day visit in October to Beijing by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, signing a broad range of agreements including a USD 30 billion currency swap pact, amid rising trade tensions with Washington.

During Abe's visit Chinese President Xi Jinping said bilateral ties had returned to the right track and China would ensure that the positive momentum continues, state media reported.

Bugatti has no plans for an SUV – Mr Stephan Winkelmann

Automotive News reported that Bugatti has no plans to launch an SUV even though wealthy buyers are flocking to such models. Mr Stephan Winkelmann CEO said that an SUV would not be in keeping with the Volkswagen Group supercar brand's profile and history.

Bugatti's ultraluxury sister brands in VW Group have launched SUVs -Lamborghini with the Urus and Bentley with the Bentayga. Rival Ferrari is developing the Purosangue crossover due in 2022, while Rolls-Royce is currently introducing the Cullinan crossover.

Mr Winkelmann said Bugatti plans to develop new models but added "there will be no SUV" irrespective of market trends.

His comments are noteworthy because Lamborghini introduced the Urus during his 11-year stint as CEO of the brand, which he left to run Audi Sport in March 2016. He has been in charge of Bugatti since January 2018.

Bugatti's only two models are the 1,479-hp Chiron and its track-focused derivative, the 1,480-hp Divo. Both are mid-engine, two-seater sports cars.

The company has built 76 units of the Chiron at its factory in Molsheim, France. Production of the 500-unit limited series is scheduled to end in 2021. All 40 units of the limited-edition, 5 million-euro (USD 5.8 million) Divo have been sold.

As the first French carmaker to do so in China, Groupe PSA demonstrates its leading position in the development of vehicle connectivity and autonomous driving technology, reinforcing the Group’s commitment to the Chinese market.

Groupe PSA’s autonomous car experience in Europe helps it to adapt to the local environment to meet Chinese market needs. The challenge is to integrate Groupe PSA’s technology into the Chinese ecosystem with special cases since the environment, infrastructure, map system and road users are different.

Groupe PSA is the first car manufacturer to have tested the autonomous car on open roads in France from July 2015 onwards, as well as the first carmaker to obtain the authorisations to carry out autonomous mode tests with “non-expert” drivers in March 2017.

Mr Carla Gohin, Vice President, Innovation of Groupe PSA, commented that “Obtaining the license for autonomous driving tests on open roads in China is a remarkable milestone for Groupe PSA, as China is the largest automobile market in the world and is witnessing the boom in the development of autonomous driving technology. This marks an important step for our AVA ‘Autonomous Vehicle for All’ program, which aims to provide safe and intuitive autonomous cars for all customers. From this fresh start, we’ll continuously bring our cutting edge technology to Chinese customers.”
