Uit de commentaren blijkt dat deze helmen, met UN opschrift, standaard uitrusting zijn van Kazachstaanse soldaten van het peace keeping bataljon

The politics of Kazakhstan are notoriously opaque and bureaucratic, but in the past few days President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has shed his image as a compliant, colorless placeholder.
With a little help from Moscow, Tokayev has ruthlessly turned the tables on his mentor, Nursultan Nazarbaev, the man who ruled Kazakhstan from independence in 1991 to 2019 and was still known as Leader of the Nation, until Wednesday.
Analysts say Kazakhstan has now entered a period of treacherous transition -- but Tokayev has emerged victorious in round one.

As the city of Almaty echoed to the sound of gunfire on January 5, Tokayev abandoned the moderate tone he'd used when the protests began, and launched -- in effect -- a palace coup.

Kazachstan: 5000 mensen opgepakt, 164 doden sinds geweldsuitbarsting

Na de rellen en demonstraties in Kazachstan zijn ruim 5000 mensen gearresteerd, heeft het ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken in het land bekendgemaakt. Volgens de Kazachse autoriteiten zijn er 164 doden zijn gevallen. Dit melden verschillende Russische media. In Almaty, de grootste stad van Kazachstan, zijn 103 mensen omgekomen.

"Tot nu toe zijn in heel Kazachstan 5135 mensen gearresteerd", citeert het Russische persbureau Interfax de Kazachse waarnemend minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Jerlan Toergoembajev. Die sprak met het lokale televisiestation Chabar 24. De autoriteiten zijn een onderzoek gestart tegen de gearresteerden die verdacht worden van verschillende strafbare feiten.

The withdrawal of the CSTO peacekeeping forces will begin in two days, their mission in Kazakhstan is coming to an end, Kazakh President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev said, addressing the Majilis (Parliament) on Tuesday, Interfax reports.

“The main mission of the CSTO forces has been completed, in two days a phased withdrawal of the united peacekeeping contingent of the CSTO will begin,” he said.

The President also emphasized that Kazakhstan legally applied to the CSTO with a request to send a peacekeeping contingent.

According to him, Kazakhstan could have lost control over Almaty if had it not turned to the CSTO, and this threatened the loss of the whole country.

Lijkt nu toch meer op een Public Relations stunt van Putin om het Westen te laten zien hoe snel het een grote troepenverplaatsing kan uitvoeren

The Collective Security Treaty Organization’s (CSTO) peacekeeping troops secured five socially important facilities in Kazakhstan in the past 24 hours, Commander of the CSTO’s collective peacekeeping forces Colonel General Andrey Serdyukov told reporters.

"CSTO peacekeepers secured another five socially important facilities in the past 24 hours," he said.

According to Serdyukov, the prompt deployment of the CSTO peacekeeping forces and their actions to secure crucial facilities made it possible for Kazakhstan’s law enforcement agencies to stabilize the situation in the country.

Protests erupted in various Kazakh cities on January 2, escalating into mass riots that involved attacks on police officers, service members and government buildings in many cities of the country, primarily in Almaty. Thousands of people were injured, and the number of casualties is unknown.

The CSTO sent peacekeepers to the Central Asian country at President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s request. Law and order, the Kazakh authorities affirm, was generally restored to all of the country’s regions.
