21 Dec, 2021, 4:44 am

Russian miner & steel maker Metalloinvest has launched a pilot plant at Mikhailovsky GOK to model iron ore beneficiation processes and develop new high-quality products. The pilot, a beneficiation plant in miniature, was developed jointly with specialists from the TOMS Institute. Six block-modules house more than 1,000 pieces of equipment for the operation of control systems, ore preparation, classification, flotation, magnetic separation, fine crushing and screening. The pilot plant makes it possible to redirect product flows and include or exclude individual operations from the scheme. This significantly reduces the time and cost of evaluating new ideas, as well as testing design and technological solutions, before implementing them in production. It allows Metalloinvest to simulate any existing or prospective beneficiation scheme in a short period of time and produce a prototype product.

Currently, the three main areas of the work at the pilot plant are the development of production schemes for the concentrate post-treatment facility being constructed at Mikhailovsky GOK and the flotation facility at Lebedinsky GOK, as well as the oxidized quartzite enrichment technology developed by Metalloinvest's specialists.

The plant has world-class equipment, automation systems and visualisation processes, remote launch, video surveillance and technology control systems.

The plant is mobile and can be disassembled into individual modules for transportation in a short timeframe and without dismantling equipment.

EC Approves Scrap Recycler Ecore Sale to Derichebourg

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
22 Dec, 2021, 4:32 am

France-based metal scrap recycler Derichebourg announced that it has finalised its takeover of competitor French Groupe Ecore after having received clearance for the transaction from the EU Commission and various international competition authorities. European Commissioner for Competition Ms Margrethe Vestager said “Derichebourg is the leading metal scrap recycler in France and directly competes with Group Ecore on the collection and recycling of metal scrap in several regions in France. Together, they would have had a strong position in these markets and the acquisition would have eliminated an important alternative for customers and suppliers. We approved the acquisition of Group Ecore thanks to comprehensive divestments that will ensure that competition remains vibrant in the French recycling market”.

The Commission had concerns that the transaction, as initially notified, would have raised serious competition concerns. In particular, the Commission's investigation found that the transaction would lead to significant horizontal overlaps between the activities of the companies in the following markets

Collection and recycling of metal scrap, including end-of-life vehicles, in several local markets in France;

Recycling of electrical and electronic equipment scrap in several local markets in France

Commercialisation of shredded ferrous scrap (or ‘E40') in several local markets covering France and neighbouring countries.

The Commission found that the merged entity would have a strong market position and would face limited constraints from competitors in those markets. To address the Commission's competition concerns, Derichebourg offered to

Divest four recycling plants in France incorporating a shredder and four collection sites

Offer, at the option of the purchaser, up to five additional collection sites in France located in the same catchment area of the recycling plants divested, which will contribute to the supply of metal scrap to the shredders

Offer transitional service agreements, including access to all assets and services required to operate the divested business competitively (such as IT services, transport services, or quality, safety and environmental services) for a duration enabling the divested business to become fully independent from Derichebourg

The final commitments, following significant improvements based on the feedback received by market participants, fully address the competition concerns identified by the Commission.

The Commission therefore concluded that the proposed transaction, as modified by the commitments, no longer raises competition concerns. The Commission's decision is conditional upon full compliance with the commitments.

Plans for the merger were announced about a year ago and the purchase agreement signed in early March. None of the parties to the deal have disclosed the value of the transaction. The sellers are Guillaume Dauphin, the former sole owner of Ecore, and the investment company HIG European Capital Partner SAS, which acquired a 49% stake in the company in 2017.

Derichebourg, a subsidiary of the Groupe Derichebourg, is active in the environmental services sector, such as waste collection and recovery and business services like cleaning services. Groupe Ecore operates in the waste management sector, from the collection to the marketing of end-of-life materials. It is mainly involved in the recycling of metal scrap.

Dillinger’s Heavy Plate Rolling Mill WW2 Celebrates 50 Years

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
22 Dec, 2021, 4:37 am

German heavy plate pioneer Dillinger's WW2 heavy plate mill began operating exactly 50 years ago and in the morning of 21 December 1971, the first slab was rolled into heavy plate on the new 4.3 meter quarto four high mill stand. Dillinger has been rolling plate since 1804 and this long experience and tradition was put to use during the construction of “Walzwerk 2” or WW2 for short, as the new plant was named to distinguish it from the existing heavy plate rolling mill. It marked a new phase in Dillinger’s development towards further specialization in heavy plate of continuously improving quality and ever-larger dimensions. The production equipment was entirely made up of prototypes, from the slab pusher furnace to the rolling stand and the revolutionary shearing line. The largest possible rolling stands, rolls and drive motors were installed in the rolling mills in particular.

Over the past five decades, the WW2 has been continuously upgraded to roll even larger and heavier slabs. Today, processing the 600 millimeter thick slabs from the new CC6 continuous caster makes it possible to produce heavy plate with unit weights of up to 42 tonnes. These super-heavy plates are largely used in the monopiles of offshore wind turbines. With this, Dillinger is already making an important contribution to the sustainable generation of renewable energies.

To develop this competitive edge and further leverage the possibilities of CC6, the world’s largest continuous casting plant located in Dillingen, pusher furnace 2 in Dillinger’s rolling mill is now being modernized and reinforced in order to bring the 600 millimeter-thick slabs up to the required temperatures for plate rolling. The investments in pusher furnace 2 will significantly increase capacity for production of heavy plate. This will allow optimization of the monopile design, which will provide significant efficiency benefits for Dillinger’s customers. The company is thus contributing in important ways with its products to a successful energy transition and to achieving the climate targets in Europe and worldwide.

Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke, founded in 1685, is a world leader today in the manufacture of high-grade heavy plate steel. High-tech plate from Dillinger is used to realize extraordinary and technically advanced projects all over the globe in the steel construction, engineering, offshore, offshore wind power, and line pipe and boiler construction sectors, as well as many others.

Fitch Expects Global Steel Production to Remain Elevated in 2022

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
22 Dec, 2021, 4:43 am

Fitch Ratings in a recent report opined that Chinese steel production will register a low single-digit decline in 2022, remaining above 1 billion tonnes, as slowing property sector demand will be partly offset by higher infrastructure spending and manufacturing. Fitch said “The demand rebound in the rest of the world in 2021 was stronger than anticipated, with estimated output of 870 million tonnes in 2021, exceeding pre-pandemic levels a year earlier than expected. This was thanks to pent-up demand and stimulus measures, including the EUR 750 billion EU recovery fund and the recent USD 550 billion US infrastructure bill, with strong support for the energy transition.”

Fitch said “Since the global recovery lags that of China, GDP growth in China is already cooling to a more normal rate of 4.8% for 2022, while other countries are still seeing above-trend growth.”

The rating agency has identified the evolution of economic and environmental policies in China, and their impact on the steel industry as one of the main factors to watch. Also to look out for will be government stimulus across regions and the strength of recovery in key end-markets, and resolution of supply-chain bottlenecks, as well as evolution of protective trade measures in the US and EU. Moreover, policy commitments and support for steel decarbonisation by major economies will be crucial.
