Germany's Scholz expects EU to approve ArcelorMittal green plants

BERLIN, June 6 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expects the EU Commission to give the nod to subsidies for the climate-friendly conversion of ArcelorMittal's steelworks in Eisenhuettenstadt and Bremen, he said on Tuesday.

His government has a subsidy programme to support investment in the steel industry.

The joint application for steel mills in Eisenhuettenstadt and Bremen was being fiercely debated at the Commission, Scholz said at a townhall organised by broadcaster RTL.

"But we're pretty sure the Commission's decision, which will be made in Brussels, will come soon, that all questions will be answered and the investment ... can take place," he said.

Germany is launching a programme to make available tens of billions of euros for firms facing substantial energy costs to help the industrial sector shift towards carbon-neutral production techniques.

On Monday, the economy ministry said it planned to make around 2 billion euros available to help fund a green steel plant that Thyssenkrupp aims to build.

Een lichtpunt is nu dat elk ingekocht aandeel zal vernietigd worden en niet meer door een mandatory convertible bond geneutraliseerd wordt, dus op het einde van dit inkoopprogramma gaan we dik onder de 800.000.000 aandelen.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih Suspends Production Amidst Water Crisis

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
7 Jun, 2023, 6:09 am

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih (AMKR), the largest steel producer in Ukraine, has announced a temporary stoppage of some of its facilities in response to the aftermath of a massive water spillage at the Nova Kakhovka power plant dam. This incident, caused by a terrorist act perpetrated by Russia, has had far-reaching consequences, including severe floods and ecological damage in the southern region of Ukraine. Thousands of civilians are at risk, and the ecological effects are expected to be catastrophic.

The extensive flooding resulting from the water spillage has disrupted water supply in various regions of Ukraine, including the city of Kryvyi Rih, which heavily relies on the Kakhovka reservoir for its water source. In light of this situation and existing disruptions in water supply to its assets, AMKR has made the decision to temporarily suspend operations at some of its facilities. A representative from the company stated that equipment requiring water cooling will be temporarily halted to conserve water and protect the equipment until the situation stabilizes.

Currently, AMKR has ceased crude steel production and rolling operations, while maintaining the blast furnaces and coke batteries. The mining complex reportedly continues to operate normally. The company's ability to resume normal production will depend on the rate of water level decline in the Kakhovka reservoir and the overall impact of the terrorist attack on the hydroelectric power plant and dam.

The dam explosion at the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, allegedly carried out by Russian troops at 02:50 a.m. on June 6, has caused widespread flooding, endangering numerous villages and cities and putting thousands of civilians at risk. The ecological consequences are expected to be severe and long-lasting for the southern part of Ukraine.

While the logistical operations of other steel mills in Ukraine may not be significantly affected, concerns arise for ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, which relied heavily on the waters of the Kakhovka reservoir. Part of the city is currently experiencing water supply disruptions, and the mill may face challenges. AMKR has already restricted water consumption and suspended several metallurgical production processes. Crude steel production and rolling operations have been halted, while blast furnace and coke battery operations continue. The evaluation of a return to normal operations is expected to take around 3-4 days.

The immediate focus is on assessing the extent of damage caused by the water spillage and the decline in the water level of the Kakhovka reservoir. The situation is fluid, and AMKR will continue to provide updates on the operational schedule in the coming days.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih's commitment to maintaining a stable supply chain and fulfilling customer orders remains a top priority. However, the company acknowledges the challenges posed by the water crisis and assures customers that efforts are underway to mitigate any inconvenience caused. The impact of this crisis on the steel industry in Ukraine remains to be seen, with AMKR's situation highlighting the vulnerability of steel production to external disruptions.

ArcelorMittal's XCarb™ RRP Steel: A Quantum Leap

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
7 Jun, 2023, 6:23 am

In its relentless quest for carbon neutrality, ArcelorMittal North America has unveiled a game-changing development: the introduction of XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced (RRP) steel, a remarkable innovation that significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to conventional carbon steel available in North America. This transformative material will be supplied to General Motors (GM) and will emanate from ArcelorMittal Dofasco in Hamilton, Ontario, with shipments set to commence in the second quarter of 2023.

ArcelorMittal North America's XCarb™ RRP steel, produced through the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) route, boasts a minimum of 70% scrap content, with the potential to reach up to 90% recycled material. What sets it apart is that it achieves this reduced carbon intensity without relying on carbon offsets. As a physical steel product, XCarb™ RRP has undergone independent verification through a comprehensive Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), encompassing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Furthermore, a confirmation letter attests that the electricity used in the steelmaking process originates from renewable sources.

Peter Leblanc, CMO Automotive at ArcelorMittal, hails this breakthrough as a remarkable stride towards providing steel with significantly lower CO2 emissions to the automotive industry in North America. "XCarb™ RRP is one of the smartest steels available," he asserts, emphasizing that it is not the result of clever accounting or offsets but rather a physically superior steel with reduced carbon emissions. Leblanc affirms that this achievement aligns with ArcelorMittal's broader goal of carbon neutrality, showcasing their commitment to sustainability.

The collaboration between ArcelorMittal and GM exemplifies the industry's innovative drive towards emission reduction throughout the supply chain. Jeff Morrison, GM Vice President of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, highlights the importance of strong supplier relationships in forging a sustainable future. The agreement underscores the collective effort to create a better world by prioritizing environmental responsibility.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco is currently undergoing a significant transformation aimed at reducing carbon emissions by approximately 60%. This endeavor involves transitioning to a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) fed Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking process. Once completed, all ArcelorMittal facilities in North America that produce automotive steel will adopt the EAF-based process, further solidifying their commitment to sustainable steel production.

ArcelorMittal's ambitious climate action plan targets a 25% reduction in the carbon intensity of its global steel production by 2030, with the ultimate goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This groundbreaking initiative aligns with the company's broader strategy, which encompasses various decarbonization projects, technologies, and a commitment to sustainable practices.
