THE developers behind a €160 million urban development in the city docklands will kick off their project with a major hotel build.
Cork City Council gave the go-ahead for the HQ development at Horgan's Quay on Friday.
A joint-venture by Clarendon Properties and BAM Ireland, the development will deliver more than 230 apartments, almost 400,000 sq ft of office and 2,285 sq m of retail and restaurant space on a 6.1-acre site adjacent to Kent Railway Station.
It also includes plans for a 136-bed hotel with a rooftop garden, marking the latest investment in the city's burgeoning hotel sector.
Currently, work is finishing on a new Maldron hotel just off the South Mall, while BAM is hoping to move ahead with plans for a hotel on Sullivan's Quay shortly.
An expansion of the Metropole is due to be decided on by city planners in the coming weeks, while plans for a hostel and hotel in Parnell Place are expected shortly, too.
The Horgan's Quay project has been welcomed by the developers, who confirmed their intention to begin work as soon as possible.
A spokesperson for Clarendon said, "[We] welcome the decision by Cork City Council regarding Horgan's Quay. The Horgan's Quay redevelopment is an ambitious and exciting scheme that is key to unlocking the future development of the Cork City Docks.
"We are keen to progress this project as soon as possible and will now engage in preparing detailed construction drawings. The construction will take place on a phased basis, with the hotel likely to be the first phase of development."
The confirmation of the development has been broadly welcomed, delivering an injection of residential and retail space to the city.
Tánaiste Simon Coveney tweeted his support. He said, "Good news!
Another significant Cork docklands project changing the face of the city for the better."
