The Blood Connection is appealing for donors because the flu is keeping regular donors at home.
“When donors are unable to keep their scheduled appointments because of the flu, the community blood supply drops,” said Dr. Robert Rainer, medical director at the agency.
“There are patients undergoing surgery, receiving cancer treatment and organ transplants, who are depending on donated blood, in addition to the unexpected traumas seen at hospitals on a daily basis," he added. "When demand outweighs supply, the lives of these patients are at risk.”
The flu has been widespread this season, killing more than 100 South Carolinians, including one child. And hospitals have been limiting visitation to prevent spread of the virus.
The Blood Connection is urging healthy people to donate to help fill in during this shortage.
All blood types are needed, especially O negative since it can be transfused to almost any patient in need, officials said.
