WHY RABBITS
Rabbit is an attractive transgenic model for the study of human diseases. They
have proved interest as models in a variety of domains such as ophthalmology,
atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathies, metabolic diseases, diabetes, obesity,
respiratory diseases.
Contrary to common beliefs, rabbits are not rodents, but belong to the order of
lagomorphs, which make rabbits much closer from humans than rodents.
Rabbits offer short reproduction cycles allowing the rapid generation of transgenic
animal models, and are easy to breed in both conventional and SPF (Specific
Pathogen Free) environment.
Due to the lack of relevant genetic engineering tools, rabbits remained relatively
under-exploited as animal models in comparison to mice and rats. Thanks to its
know how and expertise in rabbit transgenesis, TRM is today in capacity to offer
high quality services for transgenic rabbit models design and production.
