Deze afdeling van Borealis staat te koop en er zou veel interesse zijn .ook OCI werd toen genoemd de deal zou dit jaar nog beklonken worden, ben benieuwd wie de koper is.

Austria-based chemicals firm Borealis AG is curtailing its production of ammonia in Europe and will “further analyze the situation” regarding its plants in Austria, France and the Netherlands, a spokeswoman said Thursday. The product is used to make nitrogen fertilizers, which have already seen spiking prices as manufacturers deal with dramatically higher costs for gas, their main feedstock.

Record high prices trigger European gas demand destruction
Author: Ben Samuel

2021/09/23

Downstrean European gas markets suffered further financial pain with new record spot gas highs on Monday, 20 September and with a focus on reductions to fertilizer producer.

A range of European fertilizer production has been taken offline amid record high Dutch TTF and British NBP gas prices, although the British government stepped in with short-term financial support which led to the resumption of one of CF Industries’ two UK fertiizer plants.

This followed a lack of UK carbon dioxide production, a by-product of ammonia production which is critical for a range of products and services, such as the UK food industry.

The British NBP front month on Monday, 20 September hit a record high of $25.5/MMBtu, with the corresponding TTF market closing at $25.4/MMBtu, a similar record, and with the ICIS TTF benchmark up from $17.2/MMBtu at the start of the month.

European spot prices then edged down but concerns over upcoming winter fundamentals mean that substantial downside is unlikely.

High gas and electricity prices have become a major global issue, with governments stepping in from Brazil to China to try to mitigate concerns over supply and the impact on downstream industries ahead of the peak winter demand period in the northern hemisphere.

BRITISH DEMAND CUTS

British gas demand from the industrial sector has dropped with some companies reducing off-take due to high NBP prices, although low renewable generation is having a larger impact on the wholesale market.

On 15 September, CF Industries announced that it would halt fertilizer production at two UK facilities due to the high cost of gas.

A day after the announcement, gas demand in Britain from the industrial sector dropped to just over 4 million cubic metres (mcm), down from 6mcm the day before.

Gas off-take from industrial users was already below average with consumption of about 5.77mcm/day during the month to date, compared with 10mcm/day over the same period between 2016-2020.

Demand from the sector only represents around 5% of the UK total, meaning even if other off-takers cut nominations, the impact on the NBP is likely to be limited.

Overall gas use during September is actually above average for the month despite the lower industrial usage, as power sector off-take has increased to compensate for low wind generation.

POWER SECTOR

Strength in gas prices has led to more UK coal-fired capacity coming back into the mix with these plants accounting for about 2.5% of the UK generation stack this month, compared to less than 1% during September 2020.

Gas demand for electricity production has still been higher than normal, as low wind output has played a much greater role than the return of coal.

In September to date, off-take from UK gas plants has averaged just under 60mcm/day, compared to 46mcm/day on average over the period between 2016-2020.

Over the same days, wind farms have produced about 2.4GW on average, accounting for less than 9% of the generation stack, down from more than 21% during September last year.

Days of particularly low wind output have corresponded with surging gas demand from the power sector, for instance on 15 September when wind farms produced just 1.7GW while off-take from gas plants was up to 70mcm.

EUROPEAN FERTILIZERS

Both British NBP front month and day-ahead have progressively climbed over the course of the summer as LNG cargoes have continually delivered into the Asian Pacific over Europe amid high Norwegian pipe gas maintenance, resulting in below-average European storage levels ahead of the winter.

CF Industries’ 595,000 tonne/year Billingham ammonia site was in the process of restarting in the middle of the week.

Reports suggested the government deal with CF Industries may have been drafted to exclude other companies which have shut production due to higher gas costs from seeking similar national subsidies.

CF Industries appeared to have bought 15,000 tonnes of ammonia from Algeria due to arrive at Tees this weekend. Yara has a site located at Immingham, in Hull, with capacity of 300,000 tonnes/year, which also closed on the back of rising energy costs.

Elsewhere in Europe, ammonia production has been stopped due to high costs for raw materials.

Prices for ammonium nitrate and calcium ammonium nitrate have escalated past the previous all-time highs reached in the financial crash of 2007-8, with prices tipped to continue increasing throughout the winter. - Fertiglobe is targeting to pay an amount of at least $315 million in dividends for the financial year 2022 (50% paid in October 2022 and 50% paid in April 2023), subject to general meeting approval => 182 miljoen dollar voor OCI (58%) => 0.86 Euro p/a

- In addition, Fertiglobe is targeting a dividend distribution for the period covering H2 2021 of at least $150 million, which will be paid in April 2022 => 87 miljoen dollar voor OCI (58%) => 0.41 Euro p/a

- As part of the reset, Fertiglobe is closing a $1.1 billion bridge financing at attractive interest rates, of which c.$250 million will be used to refinance existing debt at Fertiglobe and EFC, and the remaining $850 million to pay a dividend to its two shareholders.

DTN Retail Fertilizer Trends
DAP Fertilizer Tops $700 Per Ton for First Time in a Decade

The average retail price of DAP was $702/ton for the second week of September 2021, reaching its highest level in 10 years. The phosphate fertilizer is 62% more expensive than last year. (DTN chart)
OMAHA (DTN) -- Potash prices rose significantly compared to last month, while the average retail price of DAP reached a 10-year high, according to prices tracked by DTN for the second week of September 2021.

Potash was 6% higher compared to last month. The fertilizer had an average price of $598/ton.

The remaining seven fertilizers were all just slightly higher. DTN designates a significant price increase as 5% or more.

Four fertilizers had price increases of 3% compared to last month. MAP had an average price of $776/ton, urea $572/ton, anhydrous $762/ton, and UAN28 $381/ton.

The price of UAN32 increased 2% to $428/ton.

DAP prices increased 1% to $702/ton. The average price of 10-34-0 was fractionally higher at $632/ton. DAP rose above $700/ton for the first time in nearly 10 years. The last time the phosphorus fertilizer's price was this high was the second week of Dec. 2011 when the average price was at $702/ton.

On a price per pound of nitrogen basis, the average urea price was at $0.62/lb.N, anhydrous $0.46/lb.N, UAN28 $0.68/lb.N and UAN32 $0.67/lb.N.

There's more evidence fertilizer supply shortages could be coming. Last week, two major fertilizer manufacturers announced they were shutting down European facilities due to a relatively new issue facing fertilizer production -- high natural gas prices. (You can find more on rising natural gas prices here: )

On Sept. 15, CF Industries announced a halt in operations at two manufacturing facilities in the United Kingdom. Plants in Billingham and Ince, UK, are stopping production.

"The company does not have an estimate for when production will resume at the facilities," according to a CF Industries press release.

Then on Sept. 17 Yara announced it will curtail production at a at number of its European plants because record high natural gas prices in Europe are affecting ammonia production margins, according to a Yara press release.

By this week, Yara will have shut down around 40% of its European ammonia production capacity.

"Yara will continue to monitor the situation, with the objective to keep supplying customers but curtailing production where necessary," according to a press release.

Retail fertilizer prices compared to a year ago show all fertilizers have increased significantly.

10-34-0 is now 39% more expensive, urea is 59% higher, DAP is 62% more expensive, UAN32 is 69% higher, MAP is 73% more expensive, both potash and UAN28 are now 74% higher and anhydrous is 77% more expensive compared to last year.

DTN surveys more than 300 retailers, gathering roughly 1,700 fertilizer price bids, to compile the DTN Fertilizer Index each week. In addition to national averages, MyDTN subscribers can access the full DTN Fertilizer Index, which includes state averages, here: .

Fertilizer manufacturer CF Industries announced they restarted ammonia plants at the Donaldsonville (Louisiana) Complex after Hurricane Ida. You can read it here: .

(Bloomberg) -- China once again warned of the impact of skyrocketing energy prices on fertilizer supplies and signaled concern that food security could be affected.

The National Development and Reform Commission said fertilizers are important for agricultural production and maintaining food security, and urged authorities to ensure stable prices and prioritize the supply of raw materials and energy to chemical fertilizer companies, according to a WeChat statement.

The global fertilizer market is on a tear due to extreme weather, plant shutdowns and government sanctions, hitting farmers already buckling under the strain of rising costs and stoking fears that food inflation could worsen. In China, the rally has caught the attention of regulators, adding to a range of commodities that Beijing is scrutinizing. The NDRC, China’s top economic planner, vowed in June to crack down on urea hoarding and price gouging.

Urea futures in Zhengzhou hit a new high Thursday, tracking a rally in coal prices. While natural gas is the primary feedstock for nitrogen producers around the world, most Chinese producers use coal, making them vulnerable to Beijing’s increasingly strict policies around air pollution and the environment more broadly.

Shares of Chinese fertilizer companies were mixed after the NDRC statement. Xinyangfeng Agricultural Technology Co. fell by the daily limit in Shenzhen, while Luxi Chemical Group lost as much as 7.1%. In contrast, Hong Kong-listed Sinofert Holdings Ltd., China’s top fertilizer supplier and a unit of state-owned Sinochem Group, gained as much as 5.7%.
