NEW DELHI-- Nokia Corp.'s tax liabilities in India could be far higher than expected, according to the country's tax officials.
The Finnish company's back tax bill could balloon to $3.4 billion from the current $340 million, said an Indian income tax official who declined to be named.
India froze some of Nokia's assets in the country, including a large factory in Chennai, in September to ensure the company had sufficient funds to pay the taxes. Indian tax authorities say Nokia owes the money after claiming exemptions on software exports.
Nokia denies it has broken any tax rules and is defending itself in an Indian court.
Nokia Tuesday planned to propose setting aside more than $350 million to unfreeze its Indian assets so the company can close the sale of its handset business to Microsoft Corp., people familiar with the company's plans said.
Nokia needs access to the assets by Thursday so it can transfer them to Microsoft as part of a $7 billion deal.
