The Google Goodbye is coming in April

All upcoming smartphones from April 2021 will be Google-free, and the switch to Harmony will take place. Huawei execs have previously told me that switching the operating system in the factory production line would be quick to achieve, simply swapping out one part of the process. That change is being put into effect in just a few weeks’ time.

I’m told that users will see very little difference when it comes to the phone interface. That’s because Android is skinned by Huawei’s EMUI overlay, and the same look will be layered on top of HarmonyOS, too. But where current phones run Android with some, but not all, Android apps available, these apps will need to be rewritten for Harmony. Huawei says this is a simple process.

But it does mean the biggest problem facing a new OS – lack of big-name apps – could be a hurdle HarmonyOS will have to surmount, too. On the other hand, some of Huawei’s latest apps have been brilliant. The Petal Maps navigation app devised in conjunction with TomTom is already very strong and is a shoo-in for day one of HarmonyOS, I’m sure.

Will it work?

Let’s remember that Huawei phones sold in China don’t have Google Mobile Services on them anyway, but the international market is heavily dependent on the Play Store and other apps. That will be the test for Huawei when switching to a new platform.

But if anyone can make it work, it could be Huawei, which is consistently resourceful both in software and hardware terms. Its phones remain cutting-edge in features and design. If it can pull off a similar trick and gain apps like TikTok, Snapchat and Amazon – all of which are available in the Huawei App Gallery – alongside other big-name developers, Huawei could turn HarmonyOS into a powerful alternative.

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- At the 2021 MWCS (Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2021), a BYD Han sedan equipped with Huawei's HiCar App was showcased as one of fruits from the cooperation between the telecommunications giant Huawei and the automaker BYD.

BYD announced in last December its DiLink intelligent connected system would be available to the HiCar App, Huawei’s self-developed smartphone-to-vehicle mobile phone interconnection solution. Like its rivals like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, it transfers a smartphone-controlled interface to the car's infotainment system. Data received via the smartphone can be shown on the car screen and played through the car-mounted loudspeakers.

BYD said the introduction of the HiCar App would enable a deeper connection between users of smartphone cars and BYD’s vehicles.

Currently, the operating system of Huawei HiCar is Harmony OS 1.0. According to Huawei’s staff, the HiCar is developed based on Linux open source software. After updating to Harmony OS 2.0 in the future, it will feature more powerful functions and deliver better experience.

In the Huawei HiCar app store, there have been nearly 30 apps, most of which are dedicated to video entertainment. You can also download the apps that support HiCar mapping system, covering multiple categories like maps, music, audiobooks and news. The HiCar is also applicable to a few music Apps such as Kugou and Migu.

Aside from BYD, Huawei has to-day formed partnerships with many Chinese local automakers like Great Wall Motor, Geely and Changan Automobile, as well as the self-owned brands of BAIC Group, SAIC Motor and GAC Group.

Android will be removed from millions of Huawei smartphones this April

HUAWEI is finally dropping the popular Android operating system from all of its new smartphones starting in April, and giving existing phone owners the chance to drop the Google-developed mobile operating system at the same time, in favour of its new Harmony OS.

It's a huge change from the company, which clearly felt it needed to go its own way since the ban on using Google apps and service was introduced back in 2019. Huawei has been able to use a version of Android on devices such as the P40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro but, because it's unlicensed, users won't find any sign of apps such as Gmail, Maps or the all-important Play Store.

Petal Maps, a young but already really excellent alternative to Google Maps. Mapping apps are notoriously difficult to get right but Huawei wisely decided to choose a partner who knows a thing or two about the sector: TomTom.

The latest update comes after Huawei announced deployment of Petal Maps across 140 countries in October last year.
According to a press statement, the app is a joint venture between Dutch tech firm TomTom and will provide seamless integration on the HMS ecosystem and HarmonyOS for smartphones, wearables, tablets and other devices in 2021.

Hoorde gisteren op BNR nog iemand van TT, sinds circa 3 maanden daar als een soort "commisaris" daar, naam is me ontschoten. Opgezocht, Bram Schot denk ik.

Binnen TT denkt men dat autonoom rijden nog heel ver weg is, wellicht voor bussen e.d. level DRIE, maar het grote geld door aantallen en massa (is kassa) zal nog heel lang op zich laten wachten.
Mijn interpretatie: waarom nog heeeel lang wachten op heeeel misschien wachten totdat elke euro in autonoom substantieel gaat bijdragen aan de winst, of beter gaat zorgen dat VERLIES gaat veranderen in WINST ? Welke andere TT-bedrijfsonderdelen zouden wel voor WINST en Groei kunnen zorgen ???

Boekhouders en visionairs (niet beledigend bedoeld): kom er maar in. Beleggers mogen ook reageren. Het liefste natuurlijk diegenen die niet met een extra roze of pikzwarte bril naar het bedrijf aandeel kijken maar proberen nog enigszins OBJECTIEF te zijn en CS te hebben.

De gesprekken tussen Kia en zusterbedrijf Hyundai over de zelfrijdende elektrische auto zijn mislukt. Toch zou er nog steeds contact zijn m tussen Apple en Kia. Het gaat hierbij echter niet over elektrische auto’s. Dat suggereert nieuwssite Reuters tenminste. De bedrijven zouden in plaats daarvan werken aan zogenaamde “last mile mobility”. Vermoedelijk een voertuig dat je de laatste afstand tussen je auto en je eindbestemming kan vervoeren. De meest waarschijnlijke optie? Een elektrische step.

Dit nieuw lijkt misschien een beetje uit de lucht gegrepen, maar Hyundai – het zusterbedrijf van Kia – ontwikkelt de Ioniq, een soort elektrische step en heeft het op zijn YouTube-kanaal “last mile mobility” voor de toekomst genoemd.

In dezelfde video is te zien hoe de step uit een speciale opslag- en oplaadruimte in de auto komt en door de gebruiker naar zijn bestemming wordt gereden door middel van een kaart op zijn smartphone.

Kia gaat voor electrisch aangedreven voertuigen naar level 3.Dan kan de rest niet achterblijven. Bram geeft aan wls iedereen het heeft dat je dan geen verschil meer kunt maken. Dat klopt. Hij was de topman van audi.

Waar kan audi zich nog mee onderscheiden? Met een zacht dashboard? Het embleem?

Niet met de accu's, niet met de electromotoren, niet met het positieve imago, niet met de positieve uitstraling van de bestuurders.

Kia naar level 3, de rest moet volgen. Het blijft autoindustrie.
