Stainless Keg Supply Chain Firms form Global Steel Keg Association

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
25 Apr, 2022, 3:11 am

Stainless steel kegs’ reusability and 30+ year lifespan make them the ideal circular choice for bars and restaurants. This fact makes steel kegs a vital part of the beverage industry and is the catalyst for the formation of the new Steel Keg Association. The Steel Keg Association is a marketing-focused non-profit organization, on a mission to help increase the volume of beer and other beverages served from stainless steel kegs. The Association’s founding members represent a diverse collection of leaders in the global steel keg supply chain: BLEFA GmbH, Hillebrand Gori, Micro Matic, MicroStar Logistics, Schaefer Container Systems, and THIELMANN.

Steel kegs are truly one of the best examples of reusability and circularity, with decades of reuse potential. In the US, compared to single use containers, steel kegs save over 400,000 metric tonnes of greenhouse gases and keep roughly 500,000 tons of packaging out of landfills each year. Circularity is just part of the story of kegs. The Steel Keg Association’s education programs will also highlight that steel kegs deliver bulk liquids driving superior economic benefits for bars and restaurants. Additionally, marketing programs will showcase how consumers and brewers appreciate the uniquely “fresh” draft beer experience.

The Steel Keg Association’s efforts will be focused on the US beer market initially, expanding to the UK and Western Europe later in 2022.

Primetals VOD Plant Sets 2 World Records in Stainless Steel Making

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
04 May, 2022, 5:53 am

A Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization plant, recently supplied by Primetals Technologies, has achieved a heat size of 298.2 tonnes, a world record in stainless steelmaking. In addition, the same plant reached a carbon content of 5 parts per million after decarburization, which marks another world record for VOD plants. Turkish steel producer Çolakoglu operates the plant, located in Dilovasi about 60 kilometers to the south-east of Istanbul. Çolakoglu CO Mr Ugur Dalbeler said “As a pioneer in the Turkish steel industry, Çolakoglu has the courage to try new things. Our achievement at the VOD plant is the latest proof of this determination. While giving credit to my colleagues who have carried the flag and achieved extraordinary results, I send special thanks to Primetals Technologies for good collaboration and support. Together we create value by recycling stainless scrap, thus creating stainless steel for the Turkish industry and we will contribute to reducing Turkey’s trade deficit by replacing imports.”

To reach record-breaking results like the ones at the VOD plant, there are many obstacles in the steelmaking process that need to be overcome. For example, the process parameters for the furnace must be very accurate and well-thought-out to allow tapping at high temperatures. In that way, any clogging issues during tapping, water-cooled panel leakage, and furnace refractory problems are avoided. Also, the VOD-system needs to be designed for a very large heat size, usually these plants operate with heat sizes between 60 to 150 tons of stainless steel.

The VOD-system is a tank degassing unit which, compared to a VD-plant, is additionally equipped with an oxygen blowing lance, vacuum pump regulation for oxygen blowing conditions, and other necessary components such as gas cooling, dust filtering, and CO-burning systems. Furthermore, advanced process models are required to reach accurate end process parameters such as end chemical analysis and liquid steel temperature. The additional oxygen supply can be used for producing extra-low carbon stainless steel grades (forced decarburization) or for chemical heating of the melt in conjunction with aluminum/silicon additions (the VD-OB process).

Çolakoglu operates an electric steel plant in Dilovasi, located in the western part of Turkey. The main products at this plant are slabs, which are further processed in a hot-rolling mill, and billets used for producing reinforcing steel bars and steel rock bolt. The Çolakoglu electric steelmaking plant, one of the largest in the world, was supplied by Primetals Technologies and has been in operation for several years. In late 2020, the plant was modernized and upgraded to becoming a VOD plant.

POSCO Bags World Stainless Association’s Best Technology Award

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
01 Jun, 2022, 6:19 am

South Korean steel giant POSCO has won the Gold Award in the technology category at the 26th International Stainless Steel Forum hosted by World Stainless Association. The technology that won the Gold Award this time was the high-performance ferrite stainless steel 430RE, Ridging Endurance, manufacturing technology. As the technology was selected as the best case of stainless-related technology development this year, POSCO’s technological skill was recognized worldwide.

Recently, as home appliance makers make large-scale washing machines and drying machines, it has become important to improve the formability of the drum bottom and to reduce the defect of stripe pattern, ridging, on the surface. In addition, as the high-speed rotation performance of the drum is required to save water and power during spin-drying, the welding method with excellent bonding strength is preferred over the Lock Seaming method of connecting by folding and compressing the plate material when connecting the center of the drum.

Accordingly, POSCO developed 430RE, a specialized steel grade that has features such as enhanced formability, anti-ridging, and corrosion resistance at welds compared to existing steel types and plans to expand its supply to overseas as well as domestic home appliance companies.

Representative organization of the world’s stainless steel industry International Stainless Steel Forum, which was established in 1996, name was changed to World Stainless Association at this conference. Since 2015, the World Stainless Association has selected the best practices every year in four areas to recognize development efforts of member companies and to inspire new idea proposals.

1. Market Development

2. Technology

3. Safety

4. Sustainability

POSCO has been proving its technology by winning awards 12 times since the first year for products such as 470FC (Gold Award in Technology) for hydrogen electric vehicle divider plate in 2018, fuel tank for PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) in 2020 (Silver Award in Technology), and stainless steel sealed container (Gold Award in Market Development) in 2020.

Indian stainless steel giant Jindal Stainless Limited’s standalone revenue, EBITDA and PAT stood at INR 5,336 crores, INR 523 crores and INR 287 crores respectively during April-June 2022 quarter. JSL has recorded a sales volume of 235,530 tonnes with exports accounting for 25% share. On consolidated basis, JSL recorded revenue of INR 5,474 crores, EBITDA of INR 549 crores and PAT of INR 329 crores. JSL Managing Director Mr Abhyuday Jindal said “JSL’s focused approach on niche product development and an agile product mix helped the Company steer through unprecedented and unsteady macro-economic challenges. The domestic stainless steel industry faced a double whammy during the quarter.
