Things to know about accidents involving self-driving cars

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A small fleet of cars that maneuver through traffic using an array of sensors and computing power is driving on California roads and highways.

Since September, seven companies have received permission from the state Department of Motor Vehicles to test these cars of the future in public. Four of the 48 vehicles have gotten into accidents, according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

Here are some things to know about self-driving cars:

THE COMPANIES

The companies rolling with the most cars are not traditional automakers — they're run by Silicon Valley billionaires.

According to the DMV, Google has 23 Lexus SUVs, while electric car maker Tesla Motors has 12 vehicles. The other companies have long legacies in the car industry. Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan have three vehicles each; parts suppliers Bosch and Delphi each have two.

THE HUMANS

The DMV is still drafting rules for when the cars are ready for the general public to use. When that will be depends on whom you ask — Google executives have said their timeframe is the next few years. Others talk about truly self-driving cars say decades, not years.

For now, the DMV reviews the qualifications of the people required to be in the driver's seat — just in case.

In all, 255 people are licensed, according to the DMV.

As with the number of cars, Google has the most what it calls "safety drivers" — the tech giant has 159 of them, the DMV said.

The agency said Bosch has 12; Delphi has nine; Mercedes-Benz has 12; Nissan has 17; and Tesla has 16. Audi has 30 licensed drivers, according to the DMV, but the automakers said in an email it has 27.

HOW FAR THEY HAVE DRIVEN

Google said its cars have gone "the equivalent of over 15 years of typical human driving" since September. That would be about 140,000 miles. Google was driving its cars on public roads before state lawmakers passed a law regulating testing. "Since the start of our program 6 years ago, we've driven more than 700,000 miles autonomously, on both freeways and city streets, without causing a single accident," spokeswoman Katelin Jabbari said.

The other companies wouldn't say how many miles their test cars have driven since September.

OTHER STATES

Nevada, Michigan and Florida also have passed laws permitting self-driving cars on their roads. Because other states have not expressly outlawed the cars, companies may test elsewhere — though the four states with rules have just about every driving condition and terrain.

Regulators in Nevada, Michigan and Florida said they were not aware of any self-driving car accidents since they formally welcomed the cars onto their roads over the last few years.

Chinese smartphone sales fall in Q1; Apple's share jumps to 14.7%

After growing 19.1% Y/Y in Q4 (and seeing stronger growth earlier in 2014), Chinese smartphone shipments fell 4.3% in Q1 to 98.8M units, per IDC. Higher penetration rates, carrier subsidy cuts, and an inventory buildup near the end of 2014 contributed to the drop.IDC: "China is oftentimes thought of as an emerging market but the reality is that the vast majority of phones sold in China today are smartphones ... convincing existing users as well as feature phone users to upgrade to new smartphones will now be the key to further growth in the China market."Analysts have already noted Chinese smartphone demand has softened. Apple, for its part, has reported its Greater China revenue (iPhone or otherwise) rose 71% Y/Y in Q1 to $16.8B (29% of total revenue).Xiaomi continues growing rapidly: IDC estimates its share rose to 13.7% (#2) from 9.2% a year ago. Fellow local Android OEM Huawei saw its share rise to 11.4% (#3) from 7.8%. Samsung (OTC:SSNLF), however, saw its share fall to 9.7% from 19.9% ahead of the Galaxy S6 launch. Lenovo/Motorola's (OTCPK:LNVGY) share fell to 8.3% (#5) from 10.3%. Everyone else had 42.2% of the market.

2007 Redux? Mapping back in play

Buying and selling map companies is back in the news so I am back on Bloomberg. I really enjoyed this interview with Emily Chang and Cory Johnson on Bloomberg West. We covered a lot of ground and they had very good questions. My reference in the title refers to the year both major map companies were acquired, NAVTEQ by Nokia and TeleAtlas by TomTom. My prediction for 2015 (made and witnessed in January) was that 2015 would be a repeat of 2007; both HERE and TomTom Licensing would turn over again. I have high confidence that I will be at least half right and there’s a good chance I will be 100% right.

That said, a lot has changed since 2007, making this a more interesting situation. Consider the following (each worthy of a separate post):

1.)In 2007, conventional wisdom was that no one would ever build another digital map of the world. It was too hard and too time consuming. Google and OSM disproved that, and there’s a least one more on the way…not counting ambitions of the Chinese giants like Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent.
2.)The companies that acquired NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas underwent massive turmoil in their primary markets and in the mapping markets, wiping out most of the assumptions that they had in 2007. Nokia and TomTom’s main markets (mobile phones and PNDs) were crushed by competitors and alternatives. This hurt their ability to invest in their acquisitions at a time of significant market disruption. The loss in value of those acquisitions is well documented.
3.)In LBS, paid services gave way to ad supported services, further changing the value propositions under which they made their investments. More positively, maps, location and location-based context have spread into every corner of the internet and mobile, making it truly an ever-present utility.
4.)Changes in data collection, sensor availability, connectivity, cloud computing and data processing have radically changed the way maps are built and the economics of maintaining them. Companies built around old methods have been at a disadvantage to companies that took a fresh approach. There are plenty of the former and the latter in the mapping market.
5.)Location-enabled understanding of a business, of consumers and of the marketplace is quickly becoming a core competitive asset for many, many companies. In 2007, this was mostly about navigation, at least in the consumer side. It was the only way any of us knew how to get paid. It is still about navigation but also so much more.

So while it may happen that the mapping companies undergo ownership transition again in 2015, that doesn’t mean that this is 2007 all over again. It will be interesting to watch. This HERE story is certainly generating a lot of rumors.

It makes me appreciate anew the community around mapping and location.
