Kyiv — Six months into his war on Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin is calling for his nation to build a bigger army. He has ordered an increase of 137,000 troops, starting in January.

But if CBS News correspondent Debora Patta's rare, candid conversation with a Russian paratrooper is anything to go by, Putin's plans may come up against a growing sense of resentment among the young men sent across Russia's border to wage the leader's war in Ukraine.

Paratrooper Pavel Filatyev told Patta that he was so disgusted with the war that he defected and decided to tell his story — despite it putting him at great personal risk. His account is all the more remarkable as he's the first Russian soldier to break ranks and publish an inside account of what it's like to fight in Putin's war.

Drugs laboratorium en opslag ontmanteld in Kyiv regio

Ukraine destroyed 7 Russian ammunition depots in the past week.

Natalia Humeniuk, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s southern military command, said that Russian ammo dumps are Ukraine's main priority and that it is likely more will be targeted by the end of the week.

Ukraine's forces have hit Russian depots in Chornobaivka, Blahodatne and Starytsi.

De Russische minister van Defensie Sergej Sjoigoe loog toen deze week voor het samenwerkingsverband Shanghai Zes verklaarde dat de Russische opmars traag vorderde omdat de Russen uit alle macht wilde 'voorkomen dat er onnodige burgerslachtoffers zouden vallen'.
Dat zeggen analisten van het Britse ministerie van Defensie op Twitter. "Dat is vrijwel zeker opzettelijke desinformatie", zeggen de Britten, die de trage opmars wijten aan Russisch falen aan het front in Oekraïne. "Onder Sjoigoes bewind hebben de Russische troepen diverse militaire deadlines gemist", zo stellen zij vast. Het Russische opperbevel zou daarom al zeker zes generaals hebben ontslagen.
Dat de Russische troepen zouden willen voorkomen dat er onnodig burgerslachtoffers vallen, doen zij af als 'onwaarschijnlijk'. "Op het moment dat Sjoigoe zijn uitspraken deed, raakte in Chaplyne een Iskander SS-26-raket een trein. Daarbij werden tenminste twee kinderen gedood. Dit illustreert de Russische bereidheid om burgers schade toe te brengen als beschietingen militair voordeel kunnen opleveren."
