Pijnlijk maar is mijn inderdaad ook eens overkomen.

Schlumberger, Chevron & Microsoft for Carbon Negative Bioenergy

Schlumberger New Energy, Chevron Corporation, Microsoft and Clean Energy Systems announced plans to develop a ground-breaking bioenergy with carbon capture and sequestration project designed to produce carbon negative power in Mendota in California. The BECCS plant will convert agricultural waste biomass, such as almond trees, into a renewable synthesis gas that will be mixed with oxygen in a combustor to generate electricity. More than 99% of the carbon from the BECCS process is expected to be captured for permanent storage by injecting carbon dioxide underground into nearby deep geologic formations.

By using biomass fuel that consumes CO2 over its lifetime to produce power and then safely and permanently storing the produced CO2, the process is designed to result in net-negative carbon emissions, effectively removing greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. The plant, when completed, is expected to remove about 300,000 tons of CO2 annually, which is equivalent to the emissions from electricity use of more than 65,000 U.S. homes.

The completed facility will help improve air quality in the Central Valley by using approximately 200,000 tons of agricultural waste annually, in line with the recent California Air Resources Control Board plan to begin phasing out almost all agricultural burning in the Valley by 2025. The bioenergy technology is designed to operate without routine emissions of nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide and particulates from combustion produced by conventional biomass plants.

Powerhouse Energy Group plc (AIM: PHE), the sustainable hydrogen company, has seen its Executive Chairman, Tim Yeo, outline his long-term vision for its technology, announce good progress in Poland and welcome a significant new shareholder.

Speaking last week at the Gabelli Environmental Services Symposium, Yeo said the Company’s prospects are very promising.

Last November Powerhouse signed non-binding Heads of Terms with Hydrogen Utopia International Limited (HUI) with a view to granting HUI an exclusive non-transferable licence for the application of its DMG® technology in the country. Yeo said progress in Poland since then has been so satisfactory that the first plants there may be commissioned within a similar time frame to those in the UK.

Revealing Powerhouse’s international ambitions, Yeo said in the light of this encouraging progress the Company intends to examine market conditions in other east and Central European countries later this year.

In his presentation, Yeo said he hopes the project in Poland will be the first of many international projects for Powerhouse Energy. The Company intends to seek partners in other countries to work with, adopting a similar business model to that envisaged with Peel NRE in Britain and HUI in Poland.

However, Yeo stressed that the Company’s immediate priority remains to ensure its first hydrogen facility, based at Peel NRE’s Protos site, meets the target of being commissioned and operational by the end of Q1 2022, one year from now.

Powerhouse shares rose last week after an announcement (19.3.21) that its broker, Turner Pope Investments (TPI) had placed almost 142 million existing shares with institutional investors, including 1798 Volantis Fund, and with high net worth clients of TPI. The sale of these shares by three former shareholders of Waste2Tricity Limited, the company which was acquired by Powerhouse in July 2020, removes a potential share sale overhang and strengthens the Company’s institutional and long-term shareholder base.

Yeo’s presentation outlined the potential for the Company’s technology to reduce the amount of plastic in the world’s oceans and to improve air quality.

Other announcements included confirmation that 77 sites have been identified as potential locations for Powerhouse plants in the UK.

This presentation illustrates Yeo’s long-term vision of a world where Powerhouse technology enables plastic waste to produce clean energy instead of being dumped in the sea and billions of people to enjoy cleaner air and longer healthier lives.

Hoe werkt het?

Re-energising natural resources

Myles Kitcher, Executive Director for Peel NRE, introduces the newly launched business and how it will help the UK to achieve a green post-pandemic recovery.

The Government’s Ten Point Plan, an Energy White Paper and COP26 in Glasgow later this year are bringing everything around climate change and a green recovery in to sharp focus. Here in the North West we are also aiming to become the UK’s first low carbon industrial cluster by 2030 and the world’s first net zero industrial cluster by 2040. We were founding members of the cluster organisation, Net Zero North West, which sees the potential to create over 33,000 new jobs and deliver over £4 billion of investment.

Within Peel NRE these are just some of the areas in which we are active: providing real estate, infrastructure and operational solutions for the low carbon and circular economy sectors, delivering investible projects and also exploring innovative solutions.

This is epitomised at our Protos development where we have just started phase two construction to support the delivery of Covanta’s 49MW, £350m energy from waste plant. Innovation is at the heart of Protos and we are exploring the potential for carbon capture and either use or storage. We have a range of other enquiries ranging from plastic recycling and reprocessing to recycling waste electronics.

Waste plastic is a global problem and the UK generates over five million tonnes a year with less than 30% getting recycled – there is an increasing focus from Government policy to address this issue. We are looking to deliver plants that can sort this plastic and recycle it back into new plastic but there is a long way to go. Our partnership with Powerhouse Energy gives us the technology to convert this unrecyclable plastic into hydrogen – widely seen as the solution to decarbonise heavy goods vehicles, buses, trains etc.

The other big opportunity to decarbonise is electrification - but this needs to be from renewable sources, and we need more of it. We have two large, consented windfarms in the Shetland Islands which we will look to bring forward this year as well as other projects and large solar schemes. We have a good track record in delivering wind – 180MW over the years.

As well as electrification, heating can be decarbonised through district heating schemes, like our Mersey Heat project at our Liverpool Waters development, for which we recently received planning permission for the energy centre. Ener-Vate is looking at many other schemes across the UK and changes in the building regulations are driving change.

This nicely complements our delivery of rapid electric charging points for cars through our Drive Energi joint venture.

Water has also been an important part of the business for some years. We manage abstraction and discharge to over 124km of our various waterways allowing more sustainable drainage solutions.

Finally, materials management or “muck” is increasingly central to supporting our own development and providing recycled materials for the general market. This year we hope to construct our first soil washing plant to take waste excavation materials and produce sand.

Recycler Enviroo granted planning approval in North West at Protos

Specialist PET (polyethylene terephthalate) recycler, Enviroo has had its planning application approved for its first plastic recycling facility in the UK. The facility will be able to re-use 100% of the PET it takes in and help recycle some of the 4.9 million tonnes of plastic waste created in the UK annually.

The successful application means the plastic recycling facility will be operational in Summer 2022 at Peel NRE’s 54-hectare strategic energy and resource hub, Protos, near Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

The facility will take PET – the main material used for food and drinks packaging such as plastic bottles and certain food packaging – and convert it into the raw material for new food-grade packaging. It will see an investment of around £20 million into the local economy and create 50 new, permanent jobs.

Enviroo will use proven technology to sort and wash the waste, before creating r-PET (recycled -PET) pellets that can be used by packaging manufacturers to create new packaging products. This technology is able to re-use 100% of the PET it takes in.

This will become increasingly important from this time next year, when a new la­w will see any packaging that contains less than 30% recycled PET taxed. Some manufacturers have gone further, pledging to include up to 50% recycled material in their packaging under the UK Plastics Pact. The facility will therefore help to meet growing UK demand for recycled PET.

Ahmed Detta, CEO & Founder of Enviroo, said:

After a positive consultation with the community, we now look forward to being able to get down to business and deal with plastic waste here on our shores and importantly help to create a greener North West. Our first facility will hopefully be one of many as Enviroo look to provide a solution for packaging manufacturers who are preparing for the upcoming plastic tax legislation. Our facilities will provide the recycled PET manufacturers need in their products, while reducing the amount of virgin plastic.”

Enviroo’s first facility is at the £165m Plastic Park at Protos, which will cluster together plastic recycling and recovery technologies to create value from plastic waste, helping to avoid it ending up in landfill, exported overseas or in our oceans.

Jayne Hennessy, Development Manager at Peel NRE, part of Peel L&P said:

“Less than one third of all plastic waste in the UK is recycled. We are creating the UK’s first Plastic Park at Protos which will increase recycling rates, reducing landfill and the export of waste. This will be done by clustering together different technologies, including Enviroo’s PET recycling facility and the plastic to hydrogen facility also consented at Protos. We will be able to use technology and improved infrastructure to process many types of plastics collected by local authorities. Hopefully giving them the confidence to collect a wider range of plastic in the future”.

The Spanish company greenYng has signed an agreement with the company Ways2H for the development in Spain and Portugal of carbon-neutral hydrogen generation projects through waste recovery.

Born in 2018, greenYng is a technological startup focused on reducing the volume of waste that goes directly to landfill or incineration, thanks to its global digital platform (greenYng platform), which allows defining new waste collection models where it originates, selectively, thus facilitating its conversion into new materials or energy, boosting the circular economy and reducing the carbon footprint of companies and municipalities.

Thanks to its flexible, scalable and waste generator-oriented collection model (called YoutúYou Collecting Services), greenYng facilitates the incorporation of waste fractions back on the market. The implementation of this pioneering technology by the hand of Ways2H in Spain and Portugal will allow the recovery of a multitude of waste streams that are difficult to manage in a product such as hydrogen, neutral in emissions, since its recovery process avoids the carbon emissions that would occur if the waste were managed differently.

Ways2H technology applies an advanced and carbon neutral thermochemical process to convert residual biomass into renewable hydrogen. The process that the company has patented extracts hydrogen from various waste streams (urban solid waste, medical, plastic and organic waste), without incineration, to produce clean fuel in its use within the mobility and energy generation sector.

This same month, one of its first projects implemented in Tokyo, Japan, was presented, a facility in which a ton of dry sewage sludge is processed a day to generate between 40 and 50 kg of hydrogen, a sufficient amount to give energy to 10 passenger vehicles circulating for more than 500 kilometers each. The waste is heated at a high temperature and then converted into gas, from which pure hydrogen is extracted.

The installation is carbon neutral, and is also able to generate its own fuel in a feedback process and closed circuit.

ADVANTAGES OF THE RENEWABLE HYDROGEN

Now, both companies are promoting the first projects in the Iberian Peninsula, which they hope will begin to bear fruit and accelerate thanks to the commitment to the Next Generation Funds, which will promote projects for the generation of emission-neutral hydrogen, as well as new methods of management and recovery of energy waste, in this case without incineration, betting on hydrogen as a fuel of the future.

In the words of Jorge González, CEO of greenYng, "renewable hydrogen has important advantages over other ways of generating, storing and using renewable energies, since with this technology they combine the benefit of giving a solution to the management of waste that is difficult to recover and its conversion through a carbon neutral cycle, to a fuel of the future, for which not only Spain and Portugal, but Europe and other continents, are devoting special interest considering its value as an indispensable tool on the path of complete decarbonization to 2050."

"The National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan itself, just approved this month and which charts the path of the necessary policies and measures between now and 2030, indicates in some of its most important proposals, to use waste for its recovery to energy, while promoting the use of biofuels as necessary to decarbonize some sectors of mobility that are difficult to electrify," adds González.

For his part, Jean-Louis Kindler, CEO of Ways2H, highlighted the importance of this agreement that, thanks to the local and integral waste management approach established by greenYng, which promotes its recovery close to the point of generation, will facilitate the implementation of the first projects in the Iberian Peninsula

Powerhouse Energy Enters Loan Agreement To Progress Development Of Protos Plastics to Hydrogen Park

Loan facility will protect the delivery schedule for Protos

Powerhouse Energy Group plc (AIM: PHE), the sustainable hydrogen company pioneering hydrogen production from waste plastic, is pleased to announce that it has agreed to enter into a loan agreement to provide up to £3.8 million to Protos Plastics to Hydrogen No. 1 Limited, the Peel NRE Special Purpose Vehicle (the “SPV”).

The loan is to progress the development of the first ‘plastic park’ at the Protos plant, in the North West of England. This will be the first commercial application of Powerhouse’s waste plastic to hydrogen technology, which it is expected will be licensed to the Peel NRE SPV. Peel NRE is a group company of the Peel Group.

Powerhouse Energy Group’s unique Distributed Modular Generation (DMG®) technology provides a solution to non-recyclable plastic and produces a clean fuel that can help improve air quality by replacing diesel with hydrogen as a transport fuel. The technology aims to be used at a local level providing a closed loop solution within the community for non-recyclable plastic waste, cleaning up oceans and helping to accelerate the clean energy transition to reach the target of net zero emissions by 2030.

Under the agreement Powerhouse has agreed to provide a loan facility of up to £3.8 million. This facility is for the specific purpose of securing long lead time items and project design services in respect of the Protos project, prior to securing long-term debt funding arrangements by Peel NRE.

The loan follows the sanctioning of the project by the Powerhouse Board and it will supplement the existing Peel NRE investment. The project will use the proceeds of the loan to commit to procurement of the long lead items including the Thermal Conversion Chamber, the syn gas process module, the compression and power generation modules. The procurement packages have followed the Peel commercial review of the facility and the design has been refined to optimise the supply, mix and use of waste material feedstocks for the site in addition to the provision of options for hydrogen export.

Completion of the Protos plan remains the Company’s top priority. The Board believes the provision of this loan will protect the project development schedule and facilitate the finalisation of the SPV agreements.

Tim Yeo, Executive Chairman, said:

“Powerhouse is now putting its money where its mouth is. The joint Peel NRE/Powerhouse technical delivery team have done a fantastic job in aligning the chosen suppliers to meet the specification for DMG.

“We are confident that this loan facility has the great benefit of protecting the delivery schedule for Protos. The plant is modular and the majority of our project fabrication activities are covered in these contracts.”

While mainstream news headlines have, understandably, focused on the international rollout of vaccines and conflict in Gaza, it has been an exceptionally busy month in the sustainability space.

The Environment Bill returned to Parliament, finally passing through the House of Commons after the addition of new binding targets for species protection. Also in UK policy, the post-Brexit emissions trading system (ETS) went live.

Elsewhere, the International Energy Agency (IEA) published its first comprehensive report on delivering net-zero globally as ExxonMobil, Chevron and Shell all faced new climate requirements after landmark votes.

All the while - despite decreased investments in some fields - innovators have continued to develop or scale up new products, concepts and systems which could help corporates and governments to lead the development of a resource-efficient, low-carbon, socially equal world.

In this round-up, edie outlines five of the most promising green innovation stories from May 2021.

Bio-based pesticides

Seeds are one of the most expensive inputs for crop farmers. Yet the artificial pesticides traditionally used to protect them can wreak havoc on the environment. Certain pesticides have been proven to harm and kill bees, which are essential for pollination but in decline in geographies including the UK, and to decrease the biodiversity in the soil.

A potential solution comes from UK-based agri-firm Eden Research which has just forged a partnership to commercialise its first seed treatment product. The partnership, with Corteva Agriscience, will use chemical-free active ingredients and is delivered using a new plastic-free patented encapsulation technology for seeds, called Sustaine. The method involves enveloping the seed treatment ingredients in the plastic-free ‘micro spheres’ made using plant-based proteins. These spheres lock in a bio-based pesticide and form pores when water is added, enabling the pesticide to release.

Eden Research claims the innovation could help farmers comply with new restrictions on traditional chemical seed treatments in the sector reducing plastic use and the negative impact on biodiversity.

‘Champagne’ carbon capture

More than 90% of the heat trapped by humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions has been absorbed by the seas, with oceans also believed to be more capable than terrestrial habitats at sequestering carbon, when properly managed. But when too much heat and CO2 is absorbed, this can negatively impact marine life and weather patterns.

To that end, researchers on the SeaCURE project – a collaboration between the University of Exeter, Brunel University London, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and tgroup – is working to develop a new method of capturing carbon from seawater, thus allowing the water to sequester more carbon. The method involves temporarily make seawater more acidic, which helps get the CO2 to ‘bubble out’, before capturing it. The treated water can then be released.

The project this month received a £250,000 grant from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), as part of the £1bn net-zero innovation portfolio announced at the 2021 Budget, for an initial study. Its aim is to remove at least 100 tonnes of CO2 in its first year.

Heat batteries for homes

The question of how to decarbonise heat has been rising up the political agenda in the UK since the net-zero target was enshrined in law. Following pressure from organisations including Citizens Advice and the Climate Change Committee, the Heat & Buildings Strategy will be published in the coming weeks, outlining the preferred technology pathway to addressing this hard-to-abate source of emissions.

One innovation that could play a role is a domestic heat battery. British start-up Caldera this month unveiled such an invention, which it has called a Warmstone. The batter charger overnight when electricity prices and the grid carbon intensity is low, then releases it to power heating and hot water. The battery is intended to replace oil or LPG boilers.

Caldera recently installed its first pilot unit and expects to begin commercial production in 2022.

Plastic-to-hydrogen plants

Hydrogen has been posited as a low-carbon solution for sectors including heat, aviation and shipping. While the market is growing rapidly, most production still relies on virgin oil or gas, meaning it is not inherently low-carbon across the lifecycle.

A potential solution – aside from electrolysers powered by renewable electricity – are plants that can turn plastic waste into hydrogen. The UK’s first such facility is being built near Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, by Peel L&P Environmental.

Now, such facilities are set to come online in Hungary and Greece, after Powerhouse Energy Group plc and Hydrogen Utopia International signed an agreement. At the facilities, plastic is shredded into small pieces and then heated and vapourised. The vapour can then be used to make syngas that can be converted into hydrogen.

The technology is reportedly capable of processing plastics that are hard-to-recycle, including black plastics and flexible items like bags and crisp packets.

Power flow technology

Much has been said about the need for nations to generate more renewable electricity to meet strengthened climate targets, and less about how the grid will need to be upgraded to support additional generation and transmission.

National Grid’s Electricity Transmission arm made headlines this month after installing modular power flow technology, in what it described as the world’s first large-scale project of its kind. The technology, called SmartValve, has been added to five circuits across three substations in the North of England (namely Carlisle, Preston and Stockton-on-Tees). Each site, the organisation claims, now benefits from 500MW of additional network capacity.

National Grid is already exploring the possibility of adding an additional 500MW of capacity across two substations in the region in the second half of 2021.

ALLIANCE TO WORK ON THE PHE DMG® SYSTEM IN KONIN.


Hydrogen Utopia International Ltd. through its Polish subsidiary Hydropolis United sp. z o.o is delighted to announce that on June 9th 2021 it has signed its agreement with SWECO Poland for preparation of concept design and Environmental Impact Assessment report for the PHE DMG® Waste-to-Hydrogen project in Konin. The estimated cost of the Concept Design and the EIA report is estimated to be valued at GBP 100 000.

Sweco is a natural partner for the PHE DMG®project as it is a leading European engineering consultancy company, active in the fields of consulting engineering, environmental technology and architecture. The company plans and designs sustainable cities, industries and community infrastructure. One major megatrend which is greatly taken into consideration by Sweco is to prevent and manage the climate change through all aspects and that is why Sweco was chosen by Hydrogen Utopia International as the best Company to prepare the ground work for the PHE DMG® project in Konin.

Over the course of 2019, the city of Konin prepared a new energy transition strategy for the city, which includes both waste-to-energy initiatives as well as using hydrogen as a fuel for local transport and municipal companies. The city is currently engaged, together with other relevant regional stakeholders in preparing the territorial transition plan for the Eastern Wielkopolska region.

The transition will be strongly supported by a close collaboration between HUI and Powerhouse Energy PLC - a UK based company which is a leading provider of onsite clean energy systems and long-term energy off-take services. Powerhouse Energy uses both traditional and renewable forms of fuel to generate both electric and thermal energy in an economically viable and environmentally responsible manner. Powerhouse holds the rights to the Distributed Modular Gasification (DMG®) technology.

Hydrogen is increasingly seen as an essential component in the energy transition to clean energy away from fossil fuels. It is the best available technology for heavy-duty and long-range transport, as well as for decarbonising key industries including cement and steel production and potentially domestic heating.

In 2020 the European Union created the Just Transition Fund to ensure that certain (coal phase-out regions) areas in Europe will be able to rebuild their economy thanks to future 4.0. technologies like the DMG® system and Konin was designated by the EU as one of the Just Transition Fund areas. Since there was a very positive response from the Konin City Hall upon appreciating that the Powerhouse Energy DMG® technology not only produces a zero carbon hydrogen by-product but it also creates a significant number of jobs for each system that is end - of - life for 14,0000 tons of mixed waste plastic with 5 revenue opportunities; gate fee, sale of syngas, hydrogen, electricity and heat the DMG® system provides when in operation.

The agreement between Hydrogen Utopia International and Sweco is another step forward in finalising the process of the implementation of this technology in Poland.
