Hyundai Heavy Unit Bags Order for 2 LNG-Fueled Bulk Carriers

Yonhap, citing Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co, a local shipbuilder, reported that it has clinched a deal to build two bulkers fueled by liquefied natural gas. Under the deal with H-Line Shipping Co, a midsize South Korean shipper, Hyundai Samho will build two 180,000 tonne vessels, which will be used on a route between South Korea and Australia starting in 2022. The value of the deal was not revealed. This is the second time that H-Line has placed an order for LNG-fueled vessels with Hyundai Samho Heavy, an affiliate of industry leader Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Last October, the shipper placed an order worth 140 billion won for two LNG-fueled bulkers.

With the latest order, there will be seven LNG-powered vessels in South Korea.

Demand for LNG-fueled vessels is expected rise due to a new International Maritime Organization regulation. The IMO will lower the sulfur content cap for marine fuels from 3.5 percent to 0.5 percent in 2020.

BHP Releases First Tender for LNG Shipment of Iron Ore

BHP said that it had released the world’s first tender for LNG-fuelled transport to carry up to 27 million tonnes, or about 10 percent, of its iron ore as it seeks to position itself at the forefront of responsible mining. Apart from the quest to cut carbon emissions to curb global warming, the United Nations shipping agency is introducing tougher anti-pollution standards in the industry’s biggest shake-up for decades.

BHP said ships fuelled by LNG would eliminate NOx and SOx emissions and, though not a zero-carbon solution, would bring a significant reduction in CO2 emissions until other options are available.

BHP, the world’s biggest diversified miner, stands apart from others in the sector with its target of net zero emissions by the second half of the century, in line with UN carbon-cutting goals. That is a huge challenge, especially if it includes emissions related to the group’s vast amounts of coking coal and iron ore for steelmaking, as well as shipping of the material.

Mr Rashpal Bhatti, BHP’s vice president for maritime and supply chain excellence, said that “We recognise we have a stewardship role, working with our customers, suppliers and others to influence emissions reductions across the full life cycle of our products.”

Chevron Aims for World's Lowest Emission LNG Plant in New Kitimat Plan

Chevron will seek approval to modify its plans for the Kitimat liquefied natural gas export facility on Canada's Pacific Coast to an all-electric design it says will result in the lowest greenhouse gas emissions per ton of LNG of any large project in the world, according to a recent filing with British Columbia's environmental assessment office.

As part of a fresh round of approvals sought, CVX says the propose project will become an "all-electric plant" powered by hydroelectricity, allowing expanded capacity without the corresponding increase in emissions of a traditional LNG facility. Liquefied natural gas is created by cooling gas to -260 degrees F in an energy-intensive process typically powered by burning natural gas; Kitimat LNG instead proposes electric motor drives to run all liquefaction, utility compressors, pumps and fans with hydropower bought from the provincial utility.

LNG Vessels Will Increase Container Turnover at the Port of Riga

By officially welcoming the new container ship Containerships Polar, the Port of Riga has started regular port services to LNG-powered container vessels. It is planned that the first two 100% LNG-powered vessels Containerships Polar and Containerships Nord owned by the CMA CGM group container line will arrive at the Port of Riga three times per week, and it is expected that a third LNG vessel will join them in the autumn. Thus, the Port of Riga has made a large step towards its goal of becoming a green port and reducing the environmental impact of its operations. As the new LNG vessels are one of the largest container ships that make regular stops at the Port of Riga, it is expected that the volume of container cargo will also increase.

Use of LNG for shipping purposes is the latest and greenest technology, and has become increasingly popular in the world. It contributes to the reduction of global carbon emissions and alleviates air pollution. Burning of natural gas does not result in the emission of any harmful particles like smoke or soot, which is the worst type of air pollution. It also does not result in harmful sulphur oxide emissions, as unlike other fuels, natural gas contains only negligible amounts of sulphur oxide, which is the main component of smog.

Japanese to Lose Top LNG Importer Position to China by 2022

Wood Mackenzie reported that Japan could lose its pole position as the world’s top LNG importer to China as early as 2022. By then, LNG imports in Japan are expected to decline 12% to 72.8 million tonnes per annum compared to 2018, while China’s import volume rises 37.5% to 74.1 mmtpa. Despite losing this leadership position, Japanese buyers will continue to take a lead in contracting innovation with developments such as hybrid deals, coal indexation, joint procurement and carbon neutral cargoes. As several long-term contracts wind down from the early 2020s and with gas and power market liberalisation underway, this innovation will provide buyers more leverage and opportunities in future contracting discussions.

Meanwhile, ensuring security of supply through diversity of supply sources will remain a primary concern. Japanese buyers should continue to lead the market in sourcing LNG from new supply regions.

Senior analyst Lucy Cullen, said that “While LNG demand is declining, Japanese imports will remain above 70 mmtpa through much of the 2020s. It will remain the second largest LNG consumer in the world until at least 2040, with demand still exceeding 60 mmtpa. As such Japan still provides ample opportunities for LNG sellers, particularly as existing contracts expire. The decline in Japanese imports will be driven by competition from coal, nuclear and renewables in the power sector and slow macroeconomic growth.”

US LNG Exports to Europe Increase amid Declining Demand and Spot LNG Prices in Asia - EIA

The latest data published by the US Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy, US exports of liquefied natural gas have been growing steadily and reached a new peak of 4.7 billion cubic feet per day in May 2019. This year, the United States became the world’s third-largest LNG exporter, averaging 4.2 billion cubic feet per day in the first five months of the year, exceeding Malaysia’s LNG exports of 3.6 billion cubic feet per day during the same period. The United States is expected to remain the third-largest LNG exporter in the world, behind Australia and Qatar, in 2019–20.

US LNG exports have increased as four new liquefaction units (trains) with a combined capacity of 2.4 billion cubic feet per day—Sabine Pass Train 5, Corpus Christi Trains 1 and 2, and Cameron Train 1—came online since November 2018. Although Asian countries have continued to account for a large share of US LNG exports, shipments to Europe have increased significantly since October 2018 and accounted for almost 40% of US LNG exports in the first five months of 2019. LNG exports to Europe surpassed exports to Asia for the first time in January 2019.

A warm winter in Asia and declining price differentials between European and Asian spot natural gas prices led to increased volumes of US LNG exports delivered to Europe. Europe’s total LNG imports in the winter of 2018–19 averaged 10.2 billion cubic feet per day, 60% higher than in the previous two winters and the highest winter average since at least 2013, according to CEDIGAZ LNG data. LNG imports to Europe have been relatively low in recent years, but they are expected to grow as new LNG supply comes online and European countries continue to increase natural gas consumption as part of their decarbonization initiatives.

Total LNG imports in the three largest global LNG markets—Japan, China, and South Korea—started to decrease in February 2019 amid a milder-than-normal winter and, in Japan, the restart of nuclear power plants. China, which became the world’s second-largest LNG importer in 2017 (surpassing South Korea) and the world’s largest importer of total natural gas in 2018 (surpassing Japan and Germany), continued to increase LNG imports. Its LNG imports were 20% (1.3 Bcf/d) higher in the first five months of 2019 compared with the same period last year as the country continued to expand LNG import capacity and implement coal-to-gas switching policies.

LNG from the United States accounted for 7% of China’s total LNG imports in the first six months of 2018. In September 2018, China imposed a 10% tariff on LNG imports from the United States, and in the months since then (October 2018 through May 2019), US LNG has accounted for 1% of China’s LNG imports. Because no long-term contracts between suppliers of US LNG and Chinese buyers exist, LNG from the United States is supplied to China on a spot basis. Spot LNG shipments are dispatched based on the prevailing global spot LNG and natural gas prices, and the tariff made LNG imports from the United States to China less competitive.

POSCO’s Cryogenic Steel for LNG tanks Gets Approval

South Korean government has approved the use of Posco’s cryogenic high manganese steel for manufacturing liquefied natural gas storage tanks. The decision made after a review by an independent panel on gas technology standardization will be notified by the government. Cryogenic HMS developed by the South Korean steel giant, can withstand temperatures as low as minus 196 degree Celsius, and could replace nickel alloy steel which has been commonly used for LNG storage tanks.

POSCO plans to step up efforts to participate in LNG-related projects in line with toughening measures on green ships. By 2030, the market is expected to see fresh orders for about 890 LNG tanks and 4,700 vessels of LNG tank carriers.

Last year, the International Maritime Organization’s Maritime Safety Committee approved interim guidelines on applying HMS in cryogenic LNG storage and fuel tanks

Posco is the first steelmaker in the world that has succeeded in commercializing cryogenic HMS.
