Hyperloop One To Start Building Mumbai-Pune Route In 2019 - Mr Dhaliwal

Mr Harj Dhaliwal group’s managing director for the Middle East and India told Construction Week that Virgin Hyperloop One is looking to start Phase 1 work on its proposed Mumbai-Pune ultra-high speed hyperloop route in India before the end of 2019, effectively the 140km journey's travel time from 3.5 hours to 25 minutes. He said that “We signed the [memorandum of understanding] with Maharashtra state in November 2017. We then did a pre-feasibility study to demonstrate the economic financial case to the state, federal authorities, and our investors,” noting that the process concluded in February 2018 with the signing of a binding framework agreement.

Mr Dhaliwal explained his agreement set out a pathway to move from pre-feasibility into the development, procurement, and construction stages. He said that “Phase 1 will be dedicated to building out the initial part of the project – so it’s not something that stands alone in a test facility, but part of the permanent alignment and route. We will then do all of our demonstration to prove to the regulators that [our] system is reliable, safe, and certified for use by the public. Our timeline is that by the end of 2019 we want to commence construction on Phase 1, which is the 'demonstrator phase', as we call it."

He added that “We have really been focusing on putting a detailed project report together [to cover] preliminary engineering, costing, finalising, and more importantly, what a concession agreement would look like. We are hoping to have all of that concluded in the next two-three weeks.”

Meanwhile, Virgin Hyperloop One plans to get certification work completed between end-2023 and early-2024, which would allow the firm to move into Phase 2, including construction work.

Hyperloop One’s Indian route will link Navi Mumbai International Airport in Mumbai to the city of Pune, and is expected to benefit the combined population of 26 million of both cities.

Tata Steel unveils contribution to high-speed hyperloop transport system

Tata Steel has unveiled that how it is helping Hardt Hyperloop to create a high-speed sustainable transport system which could slash travel times in the future. At an event hosted by Hardt Hyperloop, Tata Steel showcased how it has helped to develop the tube technology required to allow passengers in the hyperloop to be carried at speeds of up to 1,200 km/h while reducing weight and construction costs by more than 50%. Hans van den Berg, Director of Tata Steel’s IJmuiden steelmaking site, said: “We are committed to having a positive impact in the world we live in. We believe that hyperloop technology can help to achieve this by contributing to new, fast and sustainable mobility. Steel is a vital component for hyperloop. We are pleased to be able to share our high-tech innovation skills and materials expertise to contribute to its future success.”

Other developments being showcased at event include lane-switching technology, which allows hyperloop vehicles to change from one lane to another at high speed. Tata Steel supplied the tracks and the motor components, which are both made of steel.

The development of the hyperloop lane switch marks the end of the first test phase at the low-speed test facility at Delft in the Netherlands, which assessed fundamental hyperloop technologies including magnetic levitation, a low-pressure environment, a propulsion system, and cargo / passenger weight simulations. The steel components, which have now been successfully tested and proven to be functional, serve as the basis for future projects planned by Hardt Hyperloop, Tata Steel and other partners.

Hardt Hyperloop also revealed the next stage in development, which includes a 3km track which will allow for the high-speed testing of vehicles and will provide the basis for the standardisation in European hyperloop infrastructure and technology.

Geen hyperlooprecord voor Delftse studenten door pech met noodrem

Het snelheidsrecord voor een hyperloop gaat niet naar Nederland. Een groep studenten uit Delft wilde het wereldrecord breken door hun capsule, een soort vacuümtrein, harder te laten rijden dan 467 kilometer per uur.

In tests leek hun capsule Atlas 02 boven de 600 kilometer per uur te kunnen komen, maar de recordpoging mislukte. De noodremmen sloegen meteen na het vertrek al aan en daardoor bleef het vaartuig steken bij 'slechts' 188 kilometer per uur. ,,We hebben helaas niet kunnen laten zien waarop we hadden gehoopt, maar we zijn trots op alles wat we dit jaar hebben bereikt’’, zo twitterde het team na afloop.

Delftse hyperloop moet wereldrecord ‘verpulveren’

De studenten deden mee aan een speciale wedstrijd die was georganiseerd door SpaceX, het ruimtevaartbedrijf van zakenman Elon Musk. Hij is ervan overtuigd dat mensen over enkele tientallen jaren rondreizen in hyperloops. Ze schieten als buizenpost door het land en zouden bijvoorbeeld in een half uur van Amsterdam naar Parijs kunnen reizen.

Topsnelheid 463 km/uur
Ongeveer twintig studententeams hadden zich aangemeld voor de Hyperloop Pod Competition. Delft en drie andere teams kwamen door de 122 veiligheidskeuringen en mochten daadwerkelijk meedoen. Ze moesten hun capsule door een vacuümbuis van ruim 1 kilometer laten schieten. De overwinning ging naar het team van de Technische Universiteit München. Hun capsule bereikte een topsnelheid van 463 kilometer per uur, net geen nieuw record.

Vorig jaar deed het Delftse team ook mee aan de Hyperloop Pod Competition. Ook toen greep het team door technische problemen naast de overwinning en naast een record. Hun vaartuig kwam niet verder dan 142 kilometer per uur, desondanks goed voor zilver. Delft had wel de eerste editie van de wedstrijd gewonnen.

Saudi Arabia Mulls World’s First Long-Range Hyperloop Test Track

Global Construction Review reported that Virgin Hyperloop One is partnering with Saudi Arabia’s Economic City Authority to begin a study on whether to build the world’s longest test and certification hyperloop track. If built, the 35km track will be based in King Abdullah Economic City, 100km north of the Red Sea port of Jeddah, and will focus on developing local expertise that could be commercialised and developed in the future. The study will focus on the development of hyperloop supply chains across Saudi Arabia. The team also plan to build a research and development centre and a hyperloop manufacturing facility.

Mr Mohanud Helal, The ECA’s secretary general, said that “Technology transfer and the high-tech job creation opportunities that this relationship will bring are fundamental to our progress as a nation and our efforts to create opportunities for our bright young people. Having hyperloop at King Abdullah Economic City is going to act as a catalyst for a Saudi Silicon Valley effect and galvanize our software development, high technology research, and manufacturing industries.”

India Advances World’s First Passenger Hyperloop System

The Government of Maharashtra has deemed hyperloop a public infrastructure project, setting it up to be the first hyperloop project in the world. The MahaIDEA Committee has also earlier approved Virgin Hyperloop One-DP World Consortium as the Original Project Proponent. This is a landmark announcement for building the Pune-Mumbai hyperloop transportation system, recognizing hyperloop technology alongside other more traditional forms of mass transit. The hyperloop project will link central Pune to Mumbai in under 35 minutes, as opposed to the current 3.5+ hours by road. The project will generate hundreds of thousands of new high tech jobs, create over USD 36 billion USD in wider socio-economic benefits, and create new hyperloop component and manufacturing opportunities for Maharashtra to export to India and the rest of the world.

Mr Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, said, “Inspired by the new India vision of Honourable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi, Maharashtra will create the first hyperloop transportation system in the world and a global hyperloop supply chain starting from Pune. We have just named DP World – Virgin Hyperloop One consortium as the Original Project Proponent for the Mumbai-Pune hyperloop project and preparing to start the public procurement process. Maharashtra and India is at the forefront of hyperloop infrastructure building now and this is a moment of pride for our people.”

Mr Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World and Chairman Virgin Hyperloop One, said that “Support for hyperloop transportation systems is mounting across the world and India has led the charge to bring hyperloop to fruition since the early stages of development. To be named OPP is an incredible vote of confidence in our ability to deliver this advanced technology to the people of India and enhance their lives.”

MAD Partners with HyperloopTT on Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure

MAD Architects has collaborated with Hyperloop Transportation Technologies on the development of an elevated, rapid transport system. MAD’s design demonstrates how the artificial can merge with nature through a new urban infrastructure, that while transforming the future of travel, also has the ability to reshape the way we plan and use public space. While providing enhanced connectivity between cities and people, the transportation system will also establish a renewed connection between people and their city through car-free raised green walkways along the roof of the tunnels, and activation spaces below in the form of parks and recreation areas.

HyperloopTT commissioned MAD to conceive a versatile pylon design that while acting as structural support for its groundbreaking transportation system, could easily be integrated across diverse environments from a bustling city center to rural farmland to the remote desert.

MAD first worked with HyperloopTT on the occasion of the 2020 Expo in Dubai. Since then, HyperloopTT has partnered with the Port of Hamburg to develop a cargo system; and revealed a full-scale 320m passenger system in Toulouse, France, that is currently in the process of integrating its full-scale passenger capsule for human trials in 2020.

Virgin Hiperloop to Connect Gulf Countries

Virgin Hyperloop One, the company that is developing futuristic transit systems in the UAE and India, is looking to connect Gulf countries as well as areas within Dubai, drastically reducing travel time. Mr Harj Dhaliwal managing director for Middle East and India at Virgin Hyperloop One, said on the sidelines of Gitex Technology Week, which opened at the Dubai World Trade Centre that we have a vision to connect Gulf region which will enable travelling from Abu Dhabi to Riyadh in 48 minutes and fromDubai to Abu Dhabi in 11 minutes . It will gives an unparalleled advantage on how the whole region, when it is connected, can become an effective zone economically.

First look at Dubai-Abu Dhabi Hyperloop
The company is currently working with the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai and Mubadala to look for synergies and developing the UAE project. Virgin Hyperloop One recently signed an agreement with King Abdullah Economic City Authority of Saudi Arabia about a month ago and is exploring opportunities of manufacturing and innovation.

Mr Dhaliwal said that we are looking at initial rollout of technology approval and certification process for safety etc. in 2025 and then a fully commercial running service around 2027-28 within the UAE and GCC adding that there is also opportunity to connect Dubai International airport to Al Maktoum airport and better connectivity of Dubai International to Dubai South after Expo 2020. If you can connect Dubai South to Dubai in just six months, it will make Dubai amazingly accessible for the residents and tourists. There is possibility of having hyperloop manufacturing in the UAE and KSA. He cited the Airbus A380 as an example.

Elon Musks futuristische hyperloop krijgt serieus vorm in Nederland. Het Delftse Hardt Hyperloop maakt maandag bekend miljoenen euro's bij investeerders te hebben opgehaald voor een nieuwe 3 kilometer lange testbaan, die onderdeel wordt van een nog te bouwen European Hyperloop Centre.

Het is snel gegaan met Hardt Hyperloop, in 2016 opgericht door de vier Delftse studenten die kort daarvoor Elon Musks prestigieuze SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition wonnen. De flamboyante ceo van Tesla en SpaceX geldt als geestelijke vader van deze futuristische vervoersvorm, waarbij capsules met snelheden tot wel duizend kilometer per uur magnetisch door bijna vacuüm buizen zweven. De 450 km afstand tussen Amsterdam en Frankfurt gaat zo terug van vier uur naar 50 minuten.

De afgelopen maanden testte Hardt Hyperloop de eigen technologie al op een 30 meter lange testbaan, de allereerste in Europa. Uniek is de speciaal ontwikkelde baanwisseltechnologie, waardoor capsules moeiteloos van de ene naar de andere baan switchen.

,,Nu willen wij de volgende stap zetten en een 3 km lang testtraject bouwen”, vertelt Tim Houter, ceo en mede-oprichter. ,,Die wordt onderdeel van ons nieuwe European Hyperloop Centre.” Vanaf 2025 moet dan de eerste commerciële hyperloop verbinding worden gebouwd.

Hyperloop
Een nieuwe investeringsronde verschaft nu meerdere miljoenen euro's aan vers kapitaal om de hoge ambities te verwezenlijken. Het bedrag is afkomstig van diverse Nederlandse en buitenlandse investeerders, waaronder het Duitse fonds Freigeist Capital. Grootste geldschieter is het Nederlandse Koolen Industries, het groene energiebedrijf van techondernemer Kees Koolen. In ruil voor aandelen verstrekt hij het grootste deel van het geld. Vorig jaar wist Hardt Hyperloop ook al vijf miljoen euro op te halen. In totaal heeft het Delftse bedrijf afgelopen jaren 10 miljoen euro opgehaald bij investeerders.

Houter is in zijn nopjes. ,,Met dit geld kunnen we naast de bouw van een testbaan ons team van 25 medewerkers uitbreiden.” Hardt Hyperloop is momenteel druk bezig om een locatie te vinden voor het nieuwe European Hyperloop Centre. De Delftenaar zegt in gesprek met vier provincies te zijn, waaronder Flevoland, waar immers ruimte in overvloed is. De beschikbaarheid van een minstens 2,5 kilometer lange strook land is één van de belangrijkste voorwaarden.

6 miljard dollar
Begin volgend jaar moet er witte rook zijn. Houter beklemtoont dat er voor provincies veel te winnen valt. Recent onderzoek, becijfert de hyperloopmarkt over zeven jaar op 6 miljard dollar. ,,Ons centrum kan de start blijken van een economische hotspot, zoals Toulouse dat in Frankrijk voor de vliegtuigbouw is. Dat levert veel werkgelegenheid op.”

Houter is er van overtuigd dat de hyperloop geen luchtfietserij blijkt. ,,Ik heb geen glazen bol, maar de technologie werkt. Als ons verdere testwerk in 2022 klaar is, staat niks commerciële exploitatie in de weg.

De eerste échte versie kan in 2025 gereed zijn, allereerst voor goederentransport. ,,Zo raken mensen er vertrouwd mee.” In 2030 volgt dan een hyperloop voor passagiers, aanvankelijk met een bescheiden lengte van circa 50 km, bijvoorbeeld van een vliegveld naar een stadscentrum.

‘Hyperloop emissieloos en sneller dan vliegtuig’

Durven mensen straks vrijwillig in een compleet afgesloten capsule te gaan zitten en zich met 700 tot 1000 km per uur door een buis laten vervoeren? ,,Jazeker, mits we die comfortabel inrichten met bijvoorbeeld grote beeldschermen aan de zijkant.” Uiteraard zal het nog decennia vergen voordat Europese steden via een fijnmazig netwerk van duizenden kilometers aan buizen met elkaar verknoopt zijn.

Houter benadrukt nog maar eens de talloze voordelen van de hyperloop en wijst op de uitdijende luchtvaart met alle CO2-uitstoot van dien. ,,De hyperloop is volledig emissieloos en sneller dan het vliegtuig.” De aanleg is goedkoper dan een hsl of een magneetzweefbaan. ,,De hyperloop vergt daarnaast minder ruimte dan een hoge snelheidslijn, waarvoor een strook land van minstens 15 meter breed nodig is.”

KADER: oud-Booking-baas Koolen enthousiast
Ondernemer Kees Koolen steekt met overtuiging geld in Hardt Hyperloop. ,,Ik houd van alles dat nieuw en disruptief is”, stelt Koolen die een neusje heeft voor talentvolle bedrijven. ,,Dit is bovendien een Nederlands bedrijf.” Eerder investeerde hij in Uber toen dat slechts tien werknemers telde. Hij stak verder in 1997 geld in Booking.com, waarvan hij later tussen 2001 en 2011 ook ceo was. Koolen voorziet een grote toekomst voor de hyperloop. ,,Mensen zullen altijd blijven reizen, maar het moet schoner. Met de hyperloop kan dat.” De hyperloop klinkt futuristisch, maar is dat niet. ,,Veel van de technologie er achter bestaat heel lang. Het is geen hocus pocus.” Naast geld zal Koolen expertise inbrengen. ,,Tegen welke problemen loop je tegen aan bij het groter groeien? Daar kunnen we bij helpen.”

2 Dutch Provinces in race to Host Hyperloop Test Center

It was announced last week that the Dutch provinces of Groningen and Zeeland have been selected as final contenders in the race to host the European Hyperloop Center. Several provinces have shown an interest in this test center for the sustainable hyperloop technology. The aim of this high-speed transport technology is to provide a solution for the growing global amount of passengers and freight. It is expected that the hyperloop can become a sustainable alternative to short-haul flights.

The EHC is initiated by Dutch developer Hardt Hyperloop. The test center is not only a facility for Hardt Hyperloop, but is also open to developers from all over the world. The EHC will consist of a three kilometer high-speed test track and a research laboratory. Research carried out at the EHC will demonstrate whether or not the hyperloop can become a realistic alternative to short-haul flights. The EHC, which will open in 2022, is expected to become the European center of hyperloop technology.
