DP World, Virgin Hyperloop One partner to create new global company

Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum attended the launch of DP World Cargospeed, a new global company created through a partnership between global trade enabler DP World and Virgin Hyperloop One, to provide hyperloop -enabled cargo systems to support the fast, sustainable and efficient delivery of palletised cargo, the company said in its press release.

The first initiative of its kind in the world, DP World Cargospeed will provide exceptional service for high-priority, on-demand goods., delivering freight at the speed of flight and closer to the cost of trucking.

DP World and the US-based Virgin Hyperloop One introduced their vision for the future of on - demand freight transportation enabled by DP World Cargospeed at an event hosted by Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, DP World Group Chairman and CEO, and Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Group Founder and Virgin Hyperloop One Chairman, at the historic vessel Queen Elizabeth 2.

Hyperloop is a futuristic mode of passenger and freight transportation in which a pod-like vehicle is propelled through a near-vacuum steel tube, with most of its air removed, at higher than airline speed. Next-generation magnetic levitation technology combined with a low - pressure tube environment enables the pods to move quickly with little friction. Hyperloop can achieve top speeds of up to 300 metres /second, making it two to three times faster than high-speed rail. The technology facilitates autonomous operations designed to reduce human errors and run with minimal delays. Hyper loop is more cost-effective to implement and operate than high-speed rail. Its fully electric and zero direct emissions make it a highly environmentally friendly technology.

DP World Cargospeed systems, enabled by Virgin Hyperloop One technology, will transport high-priority, time-sensitive goods including fresh food, medical supplies, electronics, and more. It will expand freight transportation capacity by connecting with existing modes of road, rail and air transport.

The Virgin Hyperloop One system underpinning DP World Cargospeed is unique in that it doesn’t need to be passenger -only or cargo -only. It is a mixed -use system that fully utilises system capacity and maximis es economic and social benefits. Systems are 100% electric and can be powered by renewable energy, creating a more sustainable solution for cargo transport.

Saudi Arabia scrapped plans to build an ultra-high-speed transport network - Virgin Hyperloop One

Construction Week Online reported that Virgin Hyperloop One has downplayed reports that Saudi Arabia has scrapped plans to build an ultra-high-speed transport network in the kingdom. The Sir Richard Branson-led autonomous transport company, which wants to build a GCC-wide hyperloop network, has pulled out of Saudi Arabia's Future Investment Initiative (FII), commonly known as Davos in the Desert. However, it has denied a claim by the Financial Times that the kingdom has turned its back on a deal for the hyperloop network in Saudi Arabia.

A spokesperson for Virgin Hyperloop One told Construction Week “We are not attending FII but we have not received [an] indication that our projects have been cancelled in [Saudi Arabia].”

Saudi Arabia and Virgin Hyperloop One had been in months of talks to officially launch the autonomous transport system in the kingdom. Building the network that can reach speeds of up to 300m per second would theoretically cut the time it takes to travel between Dubai and Riyadh to 48 minutes.

The first step for the project would have seen the two parties work on a feasibility study, versions of which have already completed in UAE and India, where development plans are more advanced.

Virgin Hyperloop One completed a feasibility study with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in 2017 and progress has continued on the project since then. The company is now working on a physical prototype pod to improve the passenger experience. Plans are in place to move the project to the next phase, which focuses on determining the preferred alignment for the network's route.

World's first commercial Hyperloop construction to start in Abu Dhabi in 2019 - HTT

Sputnik reported that the Los-Angeles based research firm HTT is going to make Elon Musk's Hyperloop dream become reality, shortening travel times between emirates from hours to just minutes. Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), a California-based research company, that it would start the construction of an ultra-fast commercial hyperloop track in Abu-Dhabu in Q3 2019. HTT announced the design and engineering firm Dar Al-Handasah as the lead designer and the latest investor in the Abu Dhabi project. "We are bringing the future of rapid transportation technology to all those living in the UAE," HTT Chairman Bibop Gresta said, as cited by Gulf News.

In April, the US firm struck a deal with Aldar Properties, Abu Dhabi's state-owned developer, to build a 10-kilometer track on the border of Abu-Dhabi and Dubai in a bid to connect Abu Dhabi to Al Ain (UAE) and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). At that time, Bibop Gresta praised the project as the first commercial Hyperloop system in the world and voiced hope that the project will be implemented before the universal exposition Expo 2020.

According to the Hyperloop concept, people and cargo can travel at airline speeds of up to 1,200 km per hour in special capsules through miles-long sealed steel tubes using magnetic levitation. The idea was originally proposed by Tesla founder Elon Musk in 2013 as a replacement for more expensive and less efficient rail transportation; he described it as a crossover of a Concorde. a railgun, and an air hockey table.

Tata Steel demonstrates steel tube technology for Hyperloop

Tata Steel will present its latest contribution to the European Hyperloop Program project at this year’s EuroBLECH trade show. The steel supplier has developed different design concepts for the vacuum tube technology and will now enter the prototyping stage, having already delivered electrical steel for the rail of the first European test facility in Delft, Netherlands and made financial investments in the project. At this stage, Tata Steel would like to invite other metal technology companies to join the EHP for the development of the innovative transportation system.

Hyperloop is a high-capacity, high speed transportation system that has the potential to connect cities at any distance faster and in a highly sustainable manner. The current system uses magnetically levitated pods that travel through a vacuum steel tube at potential speeds up to 1,000 km/h. As 80% of the Hyperloop infrastructure planned by EHP will be made of steel, Tata Steel will focus on the efficient construction of the infrastructure, including strong lightweight tubes and rails made from electrical steel.

Mr Paul de Vries, General Manager Process Development Strip at Tata Steel said that “We were very happy when Hardt Hyperloop, the first European start-up for the technology, approached us in 2017 to be their industry partner in the European Hyperloop Program. Sustainability is one of our most important goals as a company and therefore the innovative mobility concept fits perfectly into our corporate vision. With Hyperloop being such a unique and new system in so many ways, the development process is quite challenging.”

For the vacuum tubes, Tata Steel has developed 25 different concepts to reduce the weight and costs by 50 percent compared the tube from the first European test facility. The product is a 30-meter-long and 4.5-meter-wide (internal diameter) spiral welded tube. From these, 25 tube concepts have been selected for a 1:10 scale prototype production and pressure tests in cooperation with the Technical University of Delft.

A tube-within-a-tube method is one of the two selected designs. In case the final layout of the Hyperloop system will require larger tubes, pre-assembled tubes will be difficult to transport, requiring a tube to be constructed on-site. Therefore, this tube concept consists of single segments that could be assembled at the potential construction site. Another option is a polyhedral tube, that gains its structural stiffness from a triangle-folded steel structure. It is made up of flat triangular sections created by folding the sheet and then wound into a tube with the possibility of on-site continuous welding.

HHLA & Hyperloop Transportation Technologies establish JV

HHLA said in a press release that transporting containers at high speed through a tube to and from the Port of Hamburg – that is the joint vision of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) and the US-based research and development company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT). Both companies want to work together on making this idea a reality and have established a joint venture to achieve this. The collaboration was announced in Hamburg on Wednesday, 5 December 2018 by Angela Titzrath, Chairwoman of HHLA’s Executive Board, and Dirk Ahlborn, founder and CEO of HTT, at a joint event.

The goal of the joint venture is to develop and later market a Hyperloop transport system for shipping containers. Initially, the construction of a transfer station for testing purposes at a HHLA terminal in Hamburg and the development of a transport capsule for standard shipping containers are planned.

Behind the concept of the Hyperloop is the idea of transporting people and goods at high speed through a tube. With the help of magnetic levitation technology, the transport capsules used in the system will be sent through a tunnel, in which there is a partial air vacuum, at speeds reaching or even exceeding 1000 km/h. A test track for transporting people and goods is currently under construction in Toulouse, France. The first test journeys in Europe are set to take place here next year.

Europe's first-ever Hyperloop test track to be built in Swiss canton of Valais

The Local reported that Switzerland is to get Europe's first-ever Hyperloop test track. It will be used for research into ultra-high-speed vacuum ground transportation. The project is based in the Collombey-Muraz commune of canton Valais. It is being run by the not-for-profit research institution EuroTube in partnership with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Construction of the track should get underway in the second half of next year, SBB said in a statement. It said that the test track – designed for the transportation of goods, not people – will resemble an oversized vacuum tube. In theory, pods can travel down the track at speeds of up to 1,100 kilometres per hour, but the maximum velocity at the Valais site will be 900kmh. Tthe vacuum conditions in the tube allowed the pods to not only travel very fast but also in a highly energy-efficient manner.

Collombey-Muraz was chosen as the site for the project because the terrain is flat and relatively free of obstacles. The concept of air-pressure driven transport is far from new but has gained momentum since the entrepreneur and inventor Elon Musk devised the Hyperloop Alpha concept for a vacuum and magnetic levitation powered super-fast train.

EuroTube partners with SBB to advance vacuum maglev technologies with custom research facilities such as for #Hyperloop. As development partner SBB supports EuroTube in planning and building the first 3km-long research and test infrastructure for vacuum ground transportation.

World first hyperloop to cost up to USD 40 million per km

Khaleej Times reported that the world's first commercial hyperloop system, which is set to open in Abu Dhabi in 2020, will cost "between USD 20 million to USD 40 million per kilometre.” Mr Bibop Gresta, Chairman of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies in an exclusive interview with the Emirates News Agency, WAM announced that Abu Dhabi's Hyperloop capsule has left the assembly facility in Spain to Toulouse, France, where it will be tested and optimised, adding that this first-of-its kind project in the world "can recoup the investment in 8 to 15 years".

The first phase of the project involves construction of 10km out of a 150km system between Abu Dhabi and Dubai and is set to be ready next year.

In April 2018, HyperloopTT signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Abu Dhabi's Aldar Properties, which, when executed, will allow for the creation of a new Hyperloop TT centre including, a full scale commercial Hyperloop system, an Hyperloop R&D Advanced Mobility Centre, a Demonstration & Visitor Centre, and an Innovation Hub.

The proposed HTT site within Aldar's Seih Al Sderieh landbank is also conveniently located on the border of the Emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, close to the Expo 2020 site and Al Maktoum International Airport. Mr Gresta said that "It was a far-fetched dream, but we are all excited now that it's a dream coming true in the UAE in 2020. Basically, the Abu Dhabi Hyperloop system is right now past the feasibility study. We have already completed the study after we partnered with Aldar Properties last year. It will be the first commercial Hyperloop line in the world."

Mr Gresta said that "Today we're announcing that the capsule has already left the assembly facility in Spain, and is on its way to Toulouse, France, where we have a prototype track. As soon as it arrives in Toulouse, it will be put in a tube and then they will test the system with the first passenger."

He added that "The capsule will be assembled and optimised in Toulouse, prior to use in the Emirates with the goal of eventually connecting Abu Dhabi to Al Ain and Dubai at unprecedented speeds, safely, efficiently, and sustainably.”

The cutting-edge technology uses electro-magnetic levitation engineering to carry pods at 1,123 km/h. In other words, it is expected to reduce travel times between the emirates from hours to minutes.

Mr Gresta added that "Hyperloop can quickly become profitable. It presents the ability to build a mass transit system that would not require government subsidies.”
