“The solution to the problem is for the president of the United States, the only person of the 330 million or so of us who can sign something into law, [to reach] an agreement with the Democratic majority in the House and enough Democrats in the Senate,” McConnell told reporters during his weekly news conference. “There's no way around that.”

Asked if he would entertain legislation opening the government that could withstand a presidential veto, McConnell responded: “Of course not.” But some GOP operatives believe that McConnell, politically pragmatic, would pivot if the shutdown runs long and his members’ re-elections were imperiled.

Privately, many GOP insiders are wary of waging a protracted shutdown. Over the years, the tactic has proven woefully ineffective, and a fresh batch of public opinion polls revealed that voters are blaming Trump and Republicans for this latest showdown, rejecting arguments that recalcitrant Democrats are responsible. McConnell is probably among the skeptics.

In the past, McConnell killed efforts to shut down the government when he could and rushed to negotiate a way out when he couldn’t. To the surprise of some Democrats, the majority leader has not reprised his usual role.

“I’m disappointed that he’s absent because Leader McConnell [was] such an important player in resolving shutdowns in the past,” Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said. “He’s made repeated public statements that he thinks shutdowns are bad for his caucus, bad for the Senate, bad for the country.”

There’s another nagging issue that has stopped McConnell from getting too involved in the shutdown talks. He doesn’t trust Trump.

In late December, before he essentially removed himself and passed the baton to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., McConnell thought he had Trump’s approval for a bill that would keep the government open until early February in exchange for $1.6 billion in border security funding.

After the Senate voice-voted the bill — meaning every single Republican supported it, Trump changed his mind and opposed it.

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said Tuesday that the negative impact on the United States' economic growth from the partial government shutdown will be worse than anticipated.

Hassett discussed the consequences of the shutdown, which is in its fourth week, with Fox Business Network's Melissa Francis on "After the Bell."
"Does that sound right? 1.7% for the quarter?" Francis asked of the estimated GDP growth for the first quarter of the year.

A new Pew Research Center survey finds that majority of Americans (58%) continue to oppose substantially expanding the border wall, while 40% favor the proposal. Overall opinion on the wall is little changed from last year, but these views have never been more sharply divided along partisan lines: Republican support for the wall is at record high, while Democratic support has reached a new low.

And both sides appear to be dug in: Nearly nine-in-ten (88%) opponents of expanding the border wall say it would not be acceptable to pass a bill that includes President Donald Trump’s request for wall funding, if that is the only way to end the shutdown. Among the smaller group of wall supporters, 72% say a bill to end the shutdown would be unacceptable if it does not include Trump’s funding request.

Maar zou het helpen of niet als ze niet meer met vrachtauto's vol de grens over kunnen rijden? Het zal altijd een strijd blijven en er zal altijd drugs de grens over kunnen komen, maar om dan maar te zeggen dan doen we er niks aan slaat ook nergens op.

Tja, heb je die reportage gezien van Tom Waes in Noord-Ierland en dan al die muren, 6 meter hoge hekken….. enkel en alleen om protestanten van katholieken te scheiden... Anno januari 2019!

Het bleek de meest zinvolle, de verstandigste oplossing…..

Wat mij het meest frappeerde aan die reportage is , dat wij in onze pers, vrijwel nooit zo duidelijk geïnformeerd zijn over hoge scheidingshekken en muren in het zo bejubelde Europa...

Eenzijdige berichtgeving zullen we maar zeggen…

Klopt dat de cijfers de goede kant op gaan, alleen vertel je maar het halve verhaal. Dat is 100% te danken aan Trump die vol heeft ingezet op betere grensbewaking.

President Donald Trump invited members of Congress for lunch on Tuesday, but House Democrats turned down the invitation.

Slim van trump: nodig een stel dems uit die je kwetsbaar acht en breek het verzet. Jammer als het dan zo volledig faalt. Opnieuw een teken dat deze administratie geen idee heeft hoe te onderhandelen of hoe hun opponent te benaderen.

Verder: het verliezen van de census zaak is veel groter dan het lijkt. Het bewijst dat de GOP er alles aan doet om de verkiezingen te saboteren, op langere termijn. Alles. En dat is waartegen het denkend deel van Amerika vecht.

Het is verbijsterend hoe een president die een werkloosheid onder de 4% heeft en een economie die ogenschijnlijk draait als een tierelier een approval rating heeft van 48% (Rasmussen) of lager (37%, de rest van de pollers)....
Als het zo goed gaat, waarom is de man dan zo onpopulair?
