analist over Bloomberg - Toyota en TomTom
"more OEMs giving in to Android"
Bloomberg running an article that also Toyota is reducing its resistance towards the Big Tech guys
Toyota will soon allow Android Auto devices to connect directly to its cars, after announcing compatibility with Apple's CarPlay in January
this announcement is much smaller and nowhere comparable to the news from RN
Nonetheless it does increase our concern that more OEMs are increasingly open towards Big Tech, which will make Google Maps and in due course Apple maps serious competitors for HERE an TT
- according to Bloomberg , for the first time, Toyota will allow Android devices to connect directly to its cars, after compatibility with Apple's CarPlay.
previously both platforms cud only connect to Toyota vehicles using SmartDeviceLink, a telematics system developed by Ford tha controls how Android auto and CarPlay look on the dash and limits their access to car data
for TT this announcement is much less impactful than the announcement made by RN
Toyota is a smaller client of TT, last contract dates from 2014 combination with Harman
the integration of Toyota with Android is completey different than RN
Toyota will allow the Android devices to the Multi Media device , while RN is looking to fully integrate Android , including Google maps and assistance, effectively replacing other suppliers.
what is the impact ?
the market never saw Android as a serious competitor for HERE and TT ( duopoly)
so the impact is negative
before we panic
1) impact on earnings in our forecast period will be limited as existing contracts will be served
2) oem's dont like single sourcing, so they will continue to use HERE and TT
3) autonomous driving will increase the overall market for digital maps
4) price of an HD map is far more expensive and volumes are to surge as every car will need a map on-board
5) it's mainly HERE that has got market share to lose , TT's market share is abt 25%
and altho the first contract to go to Android is a TT client, we believe its primarily HERE that stands to lose
summarize : a strongly growing pie will have to be shared with more competitors
""
