Smartphones Motorola maken inbreuk op patent Microsoft
25 mei 2012 20:36

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL With China's growth slowing, Premier Wen Jiabao said this week that the government is open to employing pro-growth economic policies to stimulate the economy if necessary.
“We should continue to implement a proactive fiscal policy and a prudent monetary policy, while giving more priority to maintaining growth,” said Wen.
Economists do not expect China to unleash a fiscal package similar to the massive one installed during the 2008 global financial crisis, but one monetary move China will likely make is to further cut banks’ reserve-ratio requirement to free up cash for lending.
Meanwhile, here are the companies making headlines in China this week.
Yahoo (YHOO): Seven years after its initial $1 billion investment, Yahoo is relinquishing half of its 40% share of Alibaba Group for at least $7.1 billion. The buyback of Yahoo’s stake by the Chinese e-commerce giant accelerates Alibaba’s plans for an eventual initial public offering. The Wall Street Journal points out, however, that the deal was also motivated in large part by personal disagreements between Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma and former Yahoo Chief Executive Carol Bartz.
With its remaining 20% share, Yahoo will still be able to profit from any value uptick in Alibaba in the future. However, Alibaba has the right to purchase another 50% of Yahoo's remaining holdings if it goes public before the end of 2015, which could be an incentive to spur Ma to hasten IPO plans. A Reutersestimate puts Alibaba Group’s valuation at up to $100 billion should it choose to list in the future.
China's e-commerce giant has agreed to pay a minimum of $7.1 billion for half of Yahoo's 40% share
Nokia (NOK): Nokia smartphones outsell the iPhone (AAPL) in China? Yes -- despite headline-worthy stories about scuffles breaking out at the launch of the iPhone 4S, Nokia holds 7% of the smartphone market share, versus Apple’s 6%, the DigiTimes quotes Microsoft (MSFT) Greater China COO Michael van der Bel as saying.
Nokia is enjoying a sales boom courtesy of its two Windows Phone 7-based Lumia phones, the Lumia 800C and Lumia 610C, and could perhaps soon become a viable global challenger to the market-leading Apple and Android (GOOG) in the mobile platform. As noted on Minyanville, “While the rest of the world seems to think the recent Lumia launches represent the company's major pushes, they're tantamount to test runs. The real deal comes when Windows 8 smartphones and tablets hit the market later this year. In other words, you really have not seen anything yet.”
Microsoft: Speaking of Microsoft, the state-owned Xinhua news agency published a article discussing the fortunes of the company’s instant messaging (or IM) service, MSN, in China. Seven years ago, MSN entered the Chinese market and, within its first year, gained a 10% market share, with an especially strong foothold in the business market. Now, however, MSN’s share has slipped to less than 5%, thanks to the dominance of local company Tencent’s QQ.
Compared to QQ, Xinhua states, MSN’s functionality is mediocre, and is plagued with issues like spam IMs and login problems, which has caused user flight. Further exacerbating MSN’s woes are the many layers of bureaucracy between MSN and Microsoft headquarters in the US, which slowed the company’s decision-making tremendously, while QQ was able to nimbly adapt to the swiftly changing market.
MSN has been able to survive in spite of itself because many businesses have banned QQ in their offices, choosing to stick to MSN. But MSN’s hopes of a major revival will depend on whether or not the Windows Phone will take off in China.
China Sunergy (CSUN): Reacting to news last week that the US Commerce Department will impose punitive 30% tariffs on solar panel imports from China, solar cell and module maker China Sunergy announced that it is exploring the prospects of setting up a plant in the US. A company spokeswoman said that its US plant would handle module assembly, which would not require heavy capital expenditure since module lines are less expensive than cell production units.
The company broadcasted its intentions in a conference call in which it also discussed first-quarter results. Because of a 59% drop in sales to $68.5 million, China Sunergy posted a $9.6 million, or $0.71 per share, loss, compared to a profit of $3.5 million one year before. Since oversupply of solar products remains a problem globally, the company also expects to post a loss in the second quarter.
AMC: Two weeks after the deal was initially reported, China’s Wanda officially announced last Sunday that it will acquire AMC Entertainment Holdings in a deal valued at $2.6 billion. The second-largest cinema chain in North America behind Regal Entertainment Group (RGC), AMC has 347 multiplex theaters with 5,048 screens domestically and is currently owned by private-equity groups such as Apollo Investment Fund (APOL), JPMorgan Partners (JPM), Bain Capital, the Carlyle Group (CG), and others.
Wanda does not plan to make any changes to AMC’s management or strategy, and AMC will remained headquartered in Kansas City. According to the Wall Street Journal, Wanda acquired AMC “because it hopes to break into other lucrative markets and better understand how to present their domestic films to Western audiences that have traditionally been cool to their product.” Wanda will also become the first theater chain to have a commanding presence in the world’s two largest movie markets.

Credit Suisse maintained Nokia at 'Outperform' with price target of 4.5 Eur 20 minutes ago
Credit Suisse has left the shares of Nokia before final quarterly figures to "Outperform" with a target price of 4.50 €. It is true that the move to Windows-based smartphones more difficult than first thought, an analyst Kulbinder Garcha wrote in a study on Tuesday. Yet he still go out of it, that Nokia could permanently maintain the third-largest manufacturer of smart phones with a market share of eleven percent in 2013.

Voor TomTom ga ik uit van een korte opleving, 2012 wordt het jaar dat de goudbubbel barst en signalen duiden op verdere daling euro.
